The contributions to this volume were written by historians, legal historians and art historians, each using his or her own methods and sources, but all concentrating on topics from the broad subject of historical legal iconography. How have the concepts of law and justice been represented in (public) art from the Late Middle Ages onwards? Justices and rulers had their courtrooms, but also churches, decorated with inspiring images. At first, the religious influence was enormous, but starting with the Early Modern Era, new symbols and allegories began appearing. Throughout history, art has been used to legitimise the act of judging, but artists have also satirised the law and the lawyers; architects and artisans have engaged in juridical and judicial projects and, in some criminal cases, convicts have even been sentenced to produce works of art. The book illustrates and contextualises the various interactions between law and justice on the one hand, and their artistic representations in paintings, statues, drawings, tapestries, prints and books on the other.

Pour saisir l’évolution politique de la France, les résultats locaux des élections sont essentiels. Leur extrême variabilité géographique semble un défi à leur compréhension. Grâce à des cartes précises qui resituent l’électeur dans son proche milieu plutôt que seulement dans une classe sociale, cet ouvrage ambitieux montre que les variations locales de l’opinion obéissent souvent à une logique historique de longue durée qui se déroule généralement en trois stades : apparition d’une nouvelle opinion à cause d’un évènement singulier, propagation sur un terrain préexistant, limitation par les territoires des opinions rivales. Au fil des pages, Bonnets rouges, Gilets jaunes, partisans de Chasse, pêche, nature et traditions (CPNT), mais aussi du Rassemblement national, du Parti communiste, de la droite et de la gauche se mettent en place dans l’espace français. Alors s’éclaire l’épuisement actuel de l’opposition de la droite et de la gauche, comme les tentatives de remplacer cette opposition, qui puisent dans un passé plus ancien, structuré par des régularités géographiques. Ce qui est souvent présenté comme une histoire progressive est ainsi doublé par une histoire à l’envers, par la réapparition de clivages passés souvent très anciens Hervé Le Bras est historien et démographe, directeur d’études à l’EHESS. Il a notamment publié Marianne et les lapins : l’obsession démographique (Hachette, 1992) et Naissance de la mortalité (Gallimard/Seuil, 2000). Avec Emmanuel Todd, il est l’auteur du best-seller Le Mystère français (Seuil, 2013). En 2016, il a également publié Le Nouvel Ordre électoral aux Éditions du Seuil.

Quando Jan Van Eyck dipinse due sposi in una camera, consegnandoli ai posteri in questo bellissimo quadro, oggi icona della National Gallery di Londra, mai avrebbe pensato alla querelle che questo avrebbe suscitato: da anni la tesi più accreditata intorno all'identità dei due personaggi in esso raffigurati, asserisce che i due siano i coniugi lucchesi Arnolfini (senza però motivare il perché di questa pregiata committenza) ma tanti interrogativi hanno continuato a ruotare irrisolti intorno a questo enigmatico capolavoro. Uno alla volta, Marco Paoli confuta gli argomenti di questa tesi 'ortodossa' per arrivare a dimostrare che i due coniugi non sono gli Arnolfini, ma il pittore stesso e sua moglie Margaretha; un autoritratto che celebra la nascita del loro primo figlio maschio; tesi affascinante ed 'eretica' che 'destoricizza un'icona' come lo stesso Paoli ammette.
