From Sade at one end of the nineteenth century to Freud at the other, via many French novelists and poets, pleasure and pain become ever more closely entwined. Whereas the inseparability of these themes has hitherto been studied from isolated perspectives, such as psychoanalysis, sadism and sado-masochism, melancholy, or post-structuralist textualjouissance, the originality of this collaborative volume lies in its exploration of how pleasure and pain function across a broader range of contexts. On lui a consacré un film de télévision (où il est interprété par Daniel Auteuil), on a publié ses poèmes, il figure dans les dictionnaires, et dans le film Les Enfants du paradis, Hugo, Balzac, Théophile Gautier, Baudelaire l’ont évoqué, ses Mémoires, bâclés en quelques jours avant la venue du bourreau, ont été un « bestseller ». La légende en a fait un talentueux dandy du crime, un héros des bas-fonds révolté contre sa classe sociale, un Arsène Lupin chez Casque d’or. Or, comme le raconte François Foucart, Pierre-François Lacenaire (1800-1836), fut un vilain personnage, hâbleur, cruel, un raté, y compris dans ses vols minables, et dans ses assassinats sordides commis sur de petites gens. Alors, pourquoi cette sorte d’aura ? Parce que — et c’est ce qui fait l’intérêt du livre de François Foucart — il fut le premier criminel à se servir de l’opinion. Sachant parler, écrire, versifier, il séduisit des journalistes et des intellectuels, qui transformèrent l’instinct crapuleux en une révolte d’un cœur blessé contre une société qui aurait méconnu ses talents. Il subjugua le public de la cour d’assises, on fit la queue (le grand Arago en tête) pour le voir et lui être présenté dans sa cellule. On imagine Lacenaire aujourd’hui. Il n’aurait pas été décapité, il aurait dénoncé la police, les quartiers de haute sécurité, les comités de soutien se seraient multipliés, etc.

Quelques jours après, le chef du parquet de Beaune apprenait, non sans étonnement, que son prisonnier de hasard n’était autre que le fameux Lacenaire, auteur, entre autres crimes, d’un double assassinat commis tout récemment au passage du Cheval-Rouge, à Paris, sur un nommé Chardon et sur sa mère, vieille femme presque septuagénaire."
