Il 'delitto Matteotti', di cui quest'anno ricorrono i cento anni, è stato senza dubbio il più grande 'caso' della storia italiana. Proviamo a raccontarlo come se nessuno l'avesse raccontato prima, come se nessuno lo ricordasse più, facendone 'un affaire' in cui non è semplice districarsi. All'inizio dobbiamo analizzare la scena del crimine, sul lungotevere di un afoso pomeriggio romano, e descrivere la meccanica del delitto. Dopo di che si approfondisce la conoscenza prima degli esecutori e poi dei loro mandanti – il duce e il suo entourage – per raccontare la tremenda lotta per il potere e per la sopravvivenza di uomini divisi su tutto, ma accomunati dalla menzogna (mentono tutti e più di tutti mente il loro capo) e dalla consapevolezza che per salvare se stessi devono salvare a ogni costo Benito Mussolini. Poi dovremo interrogarci sui possibili moventi del delitto, muovendo dall'assunto borgesiano che se la realtà può sottrarsi all'obbligo di essere interessante, non possono sottrarvisi le ipotesi. Infine, come in ogni delitto, c'è un 'dopo', le molteplici 'vie di fuga' dall'affaire: dai processi del 1926 e del 1947 al destino di ciascun protagonista nel corso del ventennio. Ma soprattutto c'è Giacomo Matteotti. Finora è stato come un fantasma: un'assenza, una salma, la vittima. Giunti alla fine, siamo costretti a chiederci: chi è, chi era, chi è stato Matteotti? E perché proprio lui?
