I personaggi dei racconti sono i contadini di un paesino della Brianza degli anni '50 e '60. Storie di vite semplici ed umili, ma caratteristiche ed assolutamente autentiche, degne di essere raccontate. Accanto alla descrizione di proverbi, battute simpatiche, a volte esilaranti, scalate all'albero della cuccagna, e tanti altri momenti di impegno o di svago, l'autore ha cercato di aggiungere immagini delle caratteristiche degli ambienti di lavoro e di vita, delle donne e degli uomini di quell'epoca, gli usi, i costumi, i vizi, le virtù, gli impegni ludici e di lavoro, le sagre di paese che allora si chiamavamo semplicemente feste, perché era una grande festa ritrovarsi a Ferragosto, quando la gente rimaneva a casa a godersi il riposo, e non si sentiva "obbligata" ad andare al mare, in montagna o a fare lunghi viaggi all'estero. L'albero della cuccagna, ad esempio, rappresenta un po' l'icona di quel tempo con la sua bellezza, la sua spettacolare difficoltà, e l'impronta del carattere di gente forte e risoluta, avvezza all'impegno ed ai sacrifici pur di raggiungere gli obiettivi di una vita. When the wind of the 1960s blew through the world of psychiatry In 1961, when Franco Basaglia arrived outside the grim walls of the Gorizia asylum, on the Italian border with Yugoslavia, it was a place of horror, a Bedlam for the mentally sick and excluded, redolent of Basaglia’s own wartime experience inside a fascist gaol. Patients were frequently restrained for long periods, and therapy was largely a matter of electric and insulin shocks. The corridors stank, and for many of the interned the doors were locked for life. This was a concentration camp, not a hospital. Basaglia, the new Director, was expected to practise all the skills of oppression in which he had been schooled, but he would have none of this. The place had to be closed down by opening it up from the inside, bringing freedom and democracy to the patients, the nurses and the psychiatrists working in that “total institution.” Inspired by the writings of authors such as Primo Levi, R.D. Laing, Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault and Frantz Fanon, and the practices of experimental therapeutic communities in the UK, Basaglia’s seminal work as a psychiatrist and campaigner in Gorizia, Parma and Trieste fed into and substantially contributed to the national and international movement of 1968. In 1978 a law was passed (the “Basaglia law”) which sanctioned the closure of the entire Italian asylum system. The first comprehensive study of this revolutionary approach to mental health care, The Man Who Closed the Asylums is a gripping account of one of the most influential movements in twentieth-century psychiatry, which helped to transform the way we see mental illness. Basaglia’s work saved countless people from a miserable existence, and his legacy persists, as an object lesson in the struggle against the brutality and ignorance that the establishment peddles to the public as common sense.

For many years the inhabitants of Olevano Sul Tusciano, an inland village in the province of Salerno, have replaced the expression “Do not think that I am rich”, with the sentence “Don’t think I am coming from Wilmington”. During the years of the Great Migration, a good many Olevanese left their village to emigrate to the United States, and chose Wilmington, a wealthy town in Delaware, as their favourite destination. Not far from Philadelphia, in the early years of 20th century, Wilmington cornered Italian low cost labor. Its Little Italy hosted unskilled laborers mainly from the South of Italy, poor but highly motivated by a strong desire of redemption. Many of them did succeed. This book was born from the collaboration and enthusiasm of their descendants, who still live in Wilmington, and of their relatives who live in Olevano. Its aim is to insert the migratory experience of their families into the wider context of the Diaspora of the Italians all over the world at the beginning of 20th century, and to make it the paradigm of some migratory phenomena which recur over and over again, the same as yesterday and today.
