L'Album dei Mille venne realizzato dal fotografo ottocentesco Alessandro Pavia con l'intenzione di raccogliere in un unico volume tutti i ritratti dei partecipanti alla spedizione guidata dal generale Giuseppe Garibaldi. Durante l'arco di circa sette anni il fotografo Alessandro Pavia cercò di raccogliere lungo la penisola da poco riunificata le immagini dei protagonisti di questa impresa che si era voluta celebrare in questo modo particolarissimo intendendo subito il significato che questo evento avrebbe avuto all'interno della nostra storia nazionale. Per questo motivo si è voluto fare una edizione critica di questo Album che già di per sé è un “repertorio” della storia del Risorgimento italiano, una fonte unica, e in alcuni casi insostituibile per ricostruire la fisionomia, o meglio, le fisionomie dei veri e reali protagonisti dei Mille di Garibaldi la cui unica testimonianza visiva è costituita in alcuni casi dalla foto in formato carte de visite realizzata per questa eccentrica impresa editoriale e raccolta in quest'opera. I ritratti contenuti nel volume realizzati da Alessandro Pavia diventano perciò una sorta di unico anomalo “Ritratto di gruppo”. Il Museo Centrale del Risorgimento di Roma conserva tre esemplari di questo rara testimonianza artistica e documentaria che viene qui riproposta in maniera integrale. Si è ritenuto utile porre a corredo di questo repertorio fotografico un indice “ragionato” dei Mille realizzato mettendo a confronto varie redazioni di uno stesso elenco, cosí come è stata inserita una appendice documentaria di scritti di o su Alessandro Pavia.

Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian revolutionary leader and popular hero, was among the best-known figures of the nineteenth century. This book seeks to examine his life and the making of his cult, to assess its impact, and understand its surprising success. For thirty years Garibaldi was involved in every combative event in Italy. His greatest moment came in 1860, when he defended a revolution in Sicily and provoked the collapse of the Bourbon monarchy, the overthrow of papal power in central Italy, and the creation of the Italian nation state. It made him a global icon, representing strength, bravery, manliness, saintliness, and a spirit of adventure. Handsome, flamboyant, and sexually attractive, he was worshiped in life and became a cult figure after his death in 1882. Lucy Riall shows that the emerging cult of Garibaldi was initially conceived by revolutionaries intent on overthrowing the status quo, that it was also the result of a collaborative effort involving writers, artists, actors, and publishers, and that it became genuinely and enduringly popular among a broad public. The book demonstrates that Garibaldi played an integral part in fashioning and promoting himself as a new kind of “charismatic” political hero. It analyzes the way the Garibaldi myth has been harnessed both to legitimize and to challenge national political structures. La collezione fotografica del Museo Centrale del Risorgimento è composta da un insieme di circa 75.000 fotografie databili tra la prima metà dell’Ottocento e il secondo decennio del ’900. Lo scopo di questo repertorio – frutto del lavoro di inventariazione condotto da Dario Ceccuti e Emanuele Martinez e coordinato da Marco Pizzo – è quello di essere uno strumento inventariale utile per orientarsi e studiare questo importante materiale documentario all’interno del quale è possibile distinguere alcuni fondi omogenei: il fondo fotografico ritratti, composto da fotografie che ritraggono personaggi italiani e stranieri legati alla storia e alla cultura dell’Ottocento e del primo Novecento; il fondo stampe e disegni, che conserva rare vedute dell’Italia dell’Ottocento; il fondo fotografico della prima guerra mondiale e alcuni fondi fotografici speciali.
