Il diritto all’informazione è un principio fondamentale di uno stato democratico: il cittadino per accedere ai diritti e per rispondere dei suoi doveri deve disporre di una informazione corretta, plurale e indipendente. Nel caso dell'ambiente questo diritto si carica di contenuti e valori del tutto peculiari tenuto conto che dall'informazione su di esso i cittadini ne ricavano la conoscenza sulla qualità degli ambienti in cui vivono e lavorano, dell'aria che respirano, degli alimenti e delle bevande di cui si nutrono, dei prodotti che utilizzano. Ed allora perché i cittadini che vivono nei quartieri limitrofi all'ILVA di Taranto, nei centri abitati della “terra dei fuochi” e del Sulcis, solo per fare degli esempi tra le tante situazioni ambientali critiche del nostro Paese, sono costretti a vivere nella incertezza sulle condizioni di sicurezza del loro ambiente? L'analisi dei fatti ci dice che queste condizioni non sono il derivato, come alcuni vorrebbero far credere, di processi ineludibili, ma delle responsabilità innanzitutto di quegli interessi che ieri ed ancora oggi, consideravano e considerano lo sfruttamento delle risorse ambientali una opportunità di arricchimento a prescindere dalle conseguenze su esseri umani e natura, ma anche di chi a favorito nel tempo la loro copertura politica e culturale. Come impedire che tutto questo continui? Come rendere la sicurezza e la qualità ambientale una priorità nazionale non soggetta ai picchi dell'emergenza? Come fare che la qualità dello sviluppo, la sua sostenibilità, diventi il carattere prevalente del sistema produttivo e dei consumi? La risposta è una sola: rendere i cittadini e i lavoratori protagonisti responsabili delle trasformazioni degli ambienti di vita e di lavoro. Affinché questo possa avvenire fondamentale è una corretta ed esauriente informazione ambientale. In particolare si tratta di porre ordine in quella sorta di “babele mediatica ambientale”, originata dal venire meno di quella funzione di garanzia che l'informazione, segnatamente quella pubblica, ha il compito di assicurare in un sistema democratico nel rapporto “cittadini - istituzioni - imprese”. Comprendere le cause della “babele” e come porvi rimedio è lo scopo della pubblicazione.
