Il confronto tra Gesù e Socrate, implicito già in Erasmo da Rotterdam e successivamente esplicitato in Rousseau, Hegel e ora persino nei blog filosofici su Google, solleva l’interrogativo sull’identità del Nazareno. Non basta affermare, per esclusione, che egli non è un greco né di etnia né di cultura e nemmeno un giudeo della diaspora ellenistica. Tanto meno si può sostenere in modo acritico che la lingua greca degli evangelisti sia la stessa di Gesù, anche se era diffusa in Galilea negli ambienti più colti della società. Non si può nemmeno escludere che egli ne avesse una conoscenza almeno sommaria, ma di certo non era la sua lingua madre e nemmeno quella usuale come mezzo di comunicazione. Questo aspetto di Gesù si può forse misurare in certe parole dei vangeli che riflettono un’eco della tradizione sapienziale greca. Tuttavia, egli è sempre vissuto dentro i confini geografici del suo paese – proiettato solo verso l’interno e non nella direzione del Mediterraneo – e la sua formazione è di impronta essenzialmente giudaica. Spetterà così ad altri, e non a Gesù di Nazaret, il compito di portare il messaggio del vangelo nel mondo della cultura greca.

Dal canto suo, Giuseppe Segalla ripercorre tutto lo sforzo compiuto dalla ricerca storica moderna su Gesù negli ultimi duecento anni, presentando la teoria che guida la ricerca, la metodologia seguita, le conseguenze per la teologia. Raniero Cantalamessa sottolinea, infine, la rilevanza antropologica che la figura di Gesù può avere per l'uomo contemporaneo: la «vera» umanità di Gesù viene riletta a partire dal contesto culturale odierno.
