As a writer, Carlo Levi has had the misfortune to be known as the author of one book, Christ Stopped at Eboli, the account of his years of internal banishment by the Fascist authorities to a remote village in the south of Italy. Se è vero infatti che la nozione rigida di genere, nei suoi presupposti classificati, risulta inattendibile dal punto di vista della comprensione dei processi letterari e culturali, la sussistenza di una “concezione generica preliminare” (per dirla tale, secondo la classica definizione di Hirsch) non necessita di ulteriore dimostrazione della sua esistenza, eccetto l’incidere prepotentemente nelle scelte del lettore. L’ampia selezione di studi presentata in questo volume di IF, ricostruisce a margine delle separate categorie storiche temi e problemi a ben vedere connessi alla costituzione in Italia, tra la prima metà del XIX secolo e la seconda metà del Novecento, di un mercato della lettura moderno e di strategie d’autore e d’editore tendenti al coinvolgimento nella produzione letteraria del ceto medio e dei gruppi sociali subalterni: dalla marginalità alla scolarizzazione, attraverso istruzione, verità, evasione e piacere della lettura. Si tratta di una crescita in cui la formula di “genere” e la sua riconoscibilità assumono un plusvalore estetico, divenendo oggetto di imitazione, riscrittura, parodia.

Presto si rende conto di amare due donne: una reale, l’altra un sogno, ma di questo non è del tutto sicuro. I personaggi sono immersi in un’atmosfera a tratti irreale e il Tempo sembra essere il burattinaio che muove ogni ingranaggio della trama. Perché non c’è più tempo: non ce n’è per Alexis, che sa di avere come rivale la Donna del Ponte e deve affrettarsi a sconfiggerla, ma, soprattutto, non c’è più tempo per David.
