Come non riconoscere lo spirito di Orfeo nell’incanto della parola-musica di Saffo, quando ci conduce alla contemplazione dell’attimo eterno in cui la luna piena trionfa sugli astri, inargentando il cielo, o quando ci fa partecipi del piccolo estasiato éranos, il banchetto nel verde del bosco accompagnato dal mormorio gentile di un ruscello silvestre? Di stirpe aristocratica, Saffo nacque a Ereso, vicino a Mitilene, nell’isola di Lesbo, e fiorì tra la fine del secolo VII e l’inizio del VI a. C. Fu erede – l’unica, a differenza per esempio di Diotima, iniziatrice di Socrate ai misteri di Eros, di cui ci siano giunte parole scritte – di quell’epoca della cultura e della spiritualità ellenica in cui la trasmissione dei culti, delle iniziazioni e degli insegnamenti era affidata prevalentemente a figure femminili. Saffo dagli occhi di viola fu direttrice e sacerdotessa di un tiaso consacrato ad Afrodite, alle Muse e alle Cariti, e maestra di giovani donne che venivano da lei per essere educate alla poesia, alla danza, alla musica, al rito, e preparate al ruolo futuro nella famiglia e nella società. Come nella paideía virile, anche nel tiaso femminile l’educazione e l’iniziazione potevano implicare rapporti omoerotici. Saffo cantava, o cantilenava, accompagnata dalla lira, parole in musica, musica in parole che calamitano l’ascoltatore-lettore in una trama armonica, come lo sfondo stesso della vita nella visione orfica. In questo bordone sonoro si incastona, evocato da esso e insieme evocandolo, lo stato di coscienza unitaria e insieme intensamente intrisa di amore per la vita e passione a cui Saffo ci convoca, tuttora, dal tempo senza tempo, con uno sguardo baciato dalle Muse e dalle Cariti, che valica i millenni e ci restituisce intatta, sorgiva, la sua esperienza, illuminata dalla pupilla lucente della Dea, che consacra ogni vissutezza.
