Lacan and Levi-Strauss are often mentioned together in reviews of French structuralist thought, but what really links their distinct projects? In this important study, the author shows how Lacan's famous 'return to Freud' was only made possible through Lacan's reading of Levi-Strauss. Via a careful and illuminating comparison of the work of the psychoanalyst and that of the anthropologist, Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan's theories of the symbolic function, of the power of language, of the role of the father and even of the unconscious itself owe a major debt to Levi-Strauss. Lacan and Levi-Strauss is much more than an academic study of the relations between these two thinkers: it is also a superb introduction to the work of Lacan, setting out with detail and lucidity the major concepts of his work in the 1950s.

As Lévi-Strauss freely explores the mythologies of the Americas, with occasional incursions into European and Japanese folklore, tales of sloths and squirrels interweave with discussions of Freud, Saussure, "signification," and plays by Sophocles and Labiche. Lévi-Strauss critiques psychoanalytic interpretation and defends the interpretive powers of structuralism. "Electrifying. . . . A brilliant demonstration of structural analysis in action. . . . Can be read with pleasure and profit by anyone interested in that aspect of self-discovery that comes through knowledge of the universal and timeless myths that live on in all of us."—Jonathan Sharp, San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle "A characteristic tour de force. . . . One remains awed by him."—Colin Thubron, Sunday Times "With all its epistemological depth, the book reads at times like a Simenon or a Lewis Carroll, fusing concise methodology with mastery of style."—Bernadette Bucher, American Ethnologist "[An] engagingly provocative exploration of mythology in the Americas. . . . Always a good read."—Choice "A playful, highly entertaining book, fluently and elegantly translated by Bénédicte Chorier."—Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty, New York Times Book Review

Claude Lévi-Strauss is probably the most complex anthropological theorist of all time. His work continues to influence present-day thinkers in his field, but he is perhaps even more influential beyond it. As one of the key figures in the development of what is known today as ‘French theory,’ Lévi-Strauss was one of the most important thinkers of the 20th-century. His theories of interpretation, meaning and culture have helped shape the ideas and methodologies of a range of disciplines, above all literature and philosophy. At the heart of Lévi-Strauss’s work are the questions of meaning and where meaning comes from. As an anthropologist, he was primarily interested in what completely different and separate cultures might have in common. Crucially, he saw how common ground resides not on the surface of cultures (i.e., in similar customs), but deep inside invisible background structures of thought. His quest was to peel away the surface of different cultures through careful interpretation, advancing from one layer to another until he discovered the structures that lay behind all of the exterior practices and meanings. Infamously challenging, his work shows interpretative skills working at the highest, most abstract level possible.

The Oedipus Complex written by Éric Smadja and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-16 with Psychology categories.

This book examines the contentious relationship between psychoanalysis and anthropology as it has played out in disputes surrounding the Oedipus complex. Here, Éric Smadja explores the complicated historical and epistemological conditions leading up to the emergence of the conflict between the two disciplines. He considers the origins of each science, the "creation" of the Oedipus complex, and the place, role and influence of Freud’s key and controversial work Totem and Taboo, both in the history of psychoanalysis and as it connects with anthropology internationally. Focusing on such key figures as Bronislaw Malinowski, Ernest Jones, Franz Boas, Georges Devereux, Emile Durkheim, Claude Levi-Strauss and Jacques Lacan, Smadja charts the course of the debate as it unfolded during the twentieth century and tracks its contemporary status of the debate, with a focus on figures in both France and the United States. Discussing the divergences and convergences between the two fields, he compares and contrasts their historical, epistemological and methodological features and reflects on the new "acculturative" disciplines emerging from their interaction. The book concludes with a look at what the conflictual history of these two human sciences can tell us about the history of ideas and their processes and modes of communication. Exploring a dispute which reaches back to the very beginnings of psychoanalysis and anthropology, The Oedipus Complex will appeal to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, psychotherapists and academics and students of psychoanalytic studies, anthropology and the history of ideas.

Claude Levi Strauss The Anthropologist As Hero written by Eugene Nelson Hayes and has been published by MIT Press (MA) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1970 with Social Science categories.

The popularity of Levi-Strauss, in the words of the editors of this collection of current essays and reviews, resides "in his seeming rejection of history and humanism, in his refusal to see Western civilization as privileged and unique, in his view of the human mind as programmed, in his emphasis on form over content, and in his insistence that the savage mind is not inferior to the civilized." This collection includes articles on Levi-Strauss' works and essays discussing this controversial anthropologist/ethnologist's place in the realm of contemporary thought and philosophy. Levi-Strauss is perhaps best known for his doctrine of "structuralism" which he has defined, at one point, as "the search for unsuspected harmonies...[and] the discovery of a system of relations latent in a series of objects." The doctrine of structuralism is used by Levi-Strauss as the skeleton key to the study of the development of human culture in all its variety and in its origins. He applies its framework in his study of economics, social customs, language, mythology, and though he's an exact observer and tireless collector of facts, his overall view presents all culture as a kind of language to be decoded and interpreted based on inherent, preformed laws within the structure of the mind. The contributors to this volume include George Steiner, in a discussion of the philosophical and historical implications of Levi-Strauss' work; Susan Sontag, who focuses on the anthropologist's antihistorical approach and its relatedness to what she terms the "intellectual homelessness" portrayed in modern literature; Peter Caw, who has contributed an essay on outgrowths of Levi-Strauss' writings and the application of structuralism to other fields; and Robert L. Zimmerman and Lionel Abel, whose essays trace the relevance of the Levi-Strauss canon to the humanities. Edmund Leach, Francis Huxley, H. Stuart Hughes, Sanche de Gramont, Hugo G. Nutini, Bob Scholte, Colin M. Turnbull, Robert F. Murphy, and the Editors of Timeare also represented.
