Le camp de Septfonds (Tarn et Garonne) a été créé à la hâte pour rassembler des Républicains espagnols réfugiés et considérés comme "étrangers indésirables". Plus de 16 000 d'entre eux y ont ainsi été parqués puis enrôlés dans l'économie de guerre et les combats du printemps 1940 avant d'être, pour certains, déportés à Mauthausen. Ensuite, ce camp fut destiné à l'entraînement et à la démobilisation de militaires alliés – tels des Polonais – et de volontaires engagés dans la Légion Etrangère, dont de nombreux Juifs ayant fui leur pays sous domination nazie. Ce camp devint ainsi le départ vers Auschwitz de près de 300 Juifs, de familles entières raflées en Tarn-et-Garonne et dans le Lot.

De 1863 à 1931, la Nouvelle-Calédonie est connue sous le nom de « la Nouvelle ». Vingt-deux mille transportés des travaux forcés, plus de 4 000 déportés politiques, surtout de la Commune de Paris, près de 4 000 relégués, en majorité récidivistes de délits mineurs, auxquels il faut ajouter plus de 1 000 femmes transportées ou reléguées y débarquent, faisant de cette terre kanake du Pacifique Sud, l'archipel des forçats. Louis-José Barbançon retrace l'histoire de la Transportation des forçats à « la Nouvelle ». Une histoire vécue à travers l'exemple du premier convoi de 250 forçats de l'Iphigénie, arrivés dès 1864. Comme l'écrit l'auteur : « dans un pays d'immigration, l'importance dévolue aux premiers arrivés, pionniers volontaires ou malgré eux, reste une dominante de la conscience collective. On a les Mayflower qu'on peut ». Il s'agit par une étude exhaustive des dossiers individuels de ces premiers transportés de retrouver leurs origines et de découvrir leur vie et leur devenir dans la colonie pénitentiaire. Ce ne sont pas des forçats virtuels qui sont mis en scène mais bien des hommes de chair et de sang replacés dans le contexte historique d'une terre de bagne, face à la répression ou à la réhabilitation. L'originalité de ce travail tient dans le fait qu'au-delà des lois, des statistiques, de la chronologie, l'auteur tente de donner la parole à des femmes et à des hommes de rien dont il est lui-même originaire, faisant accéder ces oubliés de toujours, comme l'écrit en préface Michelle Perrot « à la dignité de l'Histoire ».

Science as an instrument to justify religious missions in secular society The relationship between religion and science is complex and continues to be a topical issue. However, it is seldom zoomed in on from both Protestant andCatholic perspectives. By doing so the contributing authors in this collection gain new insights into the origin and development of missiology. Missiology is described in this book as a “project of modernity,” a contemporary form of apologetics. “Scientific apologetics” was the way to justify missions in a society that was rapidly becoming secularized. Mission & Sciencedeals with the interaction between new scientific disciplines (historiography, geography, ethnology, anthropology, linguistics) and new scientific insights (Darwin’s evolutionary theory, heliocentrism), as well as the role of the papacy and what inspired missionary practice (first in China and the Far East and later in Africa). The renewed missiology has in turn influenced the missionary practice of the twentieth century, guided by apostolic policy. Drawing on data from three different insurgent groups within the Cambodian conflict, the book shows how the social backgrounds of combatants and commanders cause them to pursue different strategies during a decade-long transition into various postconflict settings, thereby creating different “pathways to peace.” By highlighting different vertical and horizontal ranks within the insurgent groups and the role of belligerents’ resources and networks, this qualitative study tackles an imbalance in the current research on Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR), which tends to focus on top-down planning and the technicalities of reintegration programs. It helps explain why conflict dynamics and path-dependencies differ among various social groups within the field of insurgency. By analyzing the social position, life courses and postconflict trajectories of various groups within the insurgency, the book emphasizes the diversity of transitions to peace and “brings the social back in.” The study is grounded in in-depth fieldwork conducted in Cambodia and its diaspora, including 168 firsthand interviews with ex-combatants from groups as diverse as Buddhist monks and Christian converts, intellectuals, powerful warlords, civil servants, and female communist soldiers. Using these details, the book not only builds a theory of the social structure and internal logic of armed groups, but also emphasizes the crucial importance of fighters’ own narratives about their roles in society. Therefore, in addition to advancing a sociological perspective on post-conflict transitions, the study also provides the most detailed treatment to date of the social fields of the insurgents who fought in the civil war that followed the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. These social fields continue to have a profound influence on Cambodian politics, even today.
