Questo libro è un rapporto in "presa diretta" sull'evoluzione dell'architettura del paesaggio giapponese negli ultimi anni. Seguito a una lunga ricerca, è stato sviluppato durante un viaggio faticoso e bellissimo, seguendo un itinerario per autori. Come era prevedibile non pochi sono stati i cambiamenti di rotta. Il progetto del viaggio è partito da una necessità, di vedere l'esperienza europea da un angolo critico esterno, attraverso un percorso parallelo e diverso. Il Giappone è stato naturalmente molto attrattivo come meta di viaggio in sé, ma è parso molto utile aprire questa strada per la genericità delle informazioni disponibili a fronte di una esperienza ricchissima nel campo dell'architettura contemporanea e di una tradizione altrettanto ricca, che proprio nel paesaggio e nel giardino ha uno dei fondamenti della cultura di quel paese, e che ha anche indirettamente costituito una delle fonti più incisive dell'arte moderna. Sessantaquattro casi di studio sono percorsi secondo un libero itinerario che privilegia l'approccio fotografico, ma con le stesse finalità storico-critiche di una struttura antologica. I progetti sono descritti per autori, privilegiando i soggetti della creatività, dove diano luogo allo spessore e alla continuità di un'opera coerente.

Instead, it recognizes the canon's significance in comprehending architecture, while seeking to uncover its presumed Western-centric integrity through a shift from a monological to a dialogical approach. This approach integrates concepts of identity and Otherness as dialectically articulated and mutually interrelated. In essence, the book's main thesis contends that the canon's historiographic construction overlooked the existence of “Otherness”, specifically neglecting the world beyond the North Atlantic nucleus of the West. By examining a global context to comprehend the canon formation, the book proposes a more accurate understanding of the history of modern architecture. Recognizing that this task cannot emanate from a single hegemonic center, it presents the prospect of a coral-type architectural history. This narrative should and could encompass voices from diverse cultures to explore the particular circumstances of the world intertwined with each piece or figure transiently integrated into that canon. As a result, the ideal readers of this book position themselves within multiple settings, keen on engaging in a critical global conversation about modern architectural discourse. It will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, architectural history, and cultural studies.
