In Echoes of an Invisible World Jacomien Prins offers an account of the transformation of the notion of Pythagorean world harmony during the Renaissance and the role of the Italian philosophers Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) and Francesco Patrizi (1529-1597) in redefining the relationship between cosmic order and music theory. By concentrating on Ficino’s and Patrizi’s work, the book chronicles the emergence of a new musical reality between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, a reality in which beauty and the complementary idea of celestial harmony were gradually replaced by concepts of expressivity and emotion, that is to say, by a form of idealism that was ontologically more subjective than the original Pythagorean and Platonic metaphysics.

Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major Romantic poets, and wrote what is critically recognised as some of the finest lyric poetry in the English language. This is the fourth volume of the five-volume The Poems of Shelley, which presents all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were written between late autumn 1820 and late summer 1821. They include Adonais, Shelley’s lament on the death of John Keats, widely recognised as one of the finest elegies in English poetry, as well as Epipsychidion, a poem inspired by his relationship with the nineteen-year-old Teresa Viviani (‘Emilia’), the object of an intense but temporary fascination for Shelley. The poems of this period show the extent both of Shelley’s engagement with Keats’s volume Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems (1820) — a copy of which he first read in October 1820 — and of his interest in Italian history, culture and politics. Shelley’s translations of some of his own poems into Italian and his original compositions in the language are also included here. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies to the poems, a chronological table of Shelley’s life and publications, and indexes to titles and first lines. The volumes of The Poems of Shelley form the most comprehensive edition of Shelley’s poetry available to students and scholars.

Presentato come il re di Salem e il sacerdote dell’Altissimo, Melkitsedek copre già agli inizi della storia della salvezza una funzione spirituale molto importante che non può essere confinata in quella di un insignificante reuccio dei primordi. Al contrario, assume un ruolo e una funzione universale che gli ha consentito di orientare prima la tradizione abramica, poi la strutturazione spirituale del mondo israelitico operata dal re Davide e, infine, di essere considerato il typus dello stesso Cristo, il Messia annunciato dalle tante profezie.

Pochi filosofi o storici della cultura novecenteschi hanno saputo restituire la quintessenza del Romanticismo come Isaiah Berlin; e nessuno scritto più di queste memorabili Mellon Lectures può rappresentare, di quell’accurato lavoro di filologia dello spirito, la sintesi definitiva. In sei sequenze di luminosità tagliente, Berlin spazza via con gesto deciso e perentorio i luoghi comuni che ancora gravavano su quella che egli considera la più grande rivoluzione cognitiva dell’Occidente moderno. Berlin ci rivela ad esempio che l’attacco ai Lumi è già implicito negli stessi Lumi, grazie a figure come Vauvenargues (col suo pessimismo nichilista), Montesquieu (col suo esasperato relativismo antropologico) o Hume (col tarlo scettico che rode dall’interno il grande edificio empirista). Non solo: oltre a gettar luce su figure misconosciute eppure decisive come Hamann – il cui vitalismo mistico sfocia nell’idea che Dio non sia né un geometra né un matematico ma un poeta –, Berlin delinea il Romanticismo «moderato» di Kant, Schiller e Fichte, contrapponendolo a quello «senza freni» di Schelling, della Lucinde di Schlegel, delle poesie di Tieck e dei racconti di Hoffmann. E, per finire, addita le ramificazioni «politiche» del Romanticismo nel nostro secolo, da quelle aberranti (sfociate nel fascismo) a quelle più autentiche (prodromi di un compiuto liberalismo).
