On Dangerous Ground offers an innovative assessment of the complex role that his encounters with visual cultures-architecture, objects from earlier cultural epochs (antiquities), paintings, and illustrated books-played in that process. Diane O'Donoghue introduces, often using unpublished archival sources, the ways in which material phenomena profoundly informed Freud's decisions about what would, and would not, constitute the workings of an inner life. By returning to view content that Freud treated as forgettable, as distinct from repressed, O'Donoghue shows us a realm of experiences that Freud wished to remove from psychical meaning. These erasures form an amnesic core within Freud's psychoanalytic project, an absence that includes difficult aspects of his life narrative, beginning with the dislocations of his early childhood that he declared not worth remembering. Il contribue, par son travail, à une réflexion qui s'est implicitement proposé d'étudier ce que j'appellerais globalement la rémanence dans l'oeuvre théorique freudienne. Il nous propose une interrogation de cette construction. La pratique de la cure impose au psychanalyste de ne pas adhérer au discours des théories infantiles, mais il apprend aussi qu'aucune théorie ne s'en éloigne. Cela constitue le principe même de ce qui fait trace, à la condition de savoir lire. Joël Bernat nous indique les formes originaires des énoncés freudiens et surtout comment la théorie est informée par la filiation, agissante et féconde. Il nous invite à une mise à jour lente et patiente de la mémoire freudienne, des sources voilées, du lunon de la pensée que Freud a voulu transcrire. C'est un texte rigoureux qui est proposé sans cesse reformulant cette proposition que l'écriture de la pensée est la mise en oeuvre de sédiments. C'est ainsi que nous pouvons assister ici à la croissance extérieure au sol d'origine, mais s'y fertilisant, d'une pensée psychanalytique dont il est implicitement inutile de dire qu'elle est freudienne.
