L'arte di persuadere nel linguaggio moderno. Le strategie argomentative dominano l'interazione sociale. Dalla politica, alla pubblicità fino al discorso teoretico, ci troviamo di fronte ad argomentazioni in cui si procede in base a discorsi ragionevoli, intorno a premesse probabili, valutando l'accettabilità delle conclusioni a seconda dell'indole di un uditorio storicamente e culturalmente situato. É effettivamente interessante una riflessione sul significato e le sorti dell'antica arte del persuadere e del suo essere alla vigilia di una metamorfosi. Ogni giorno, infatti, nell'attività comunicativa quotidiana, dobbiamo saper sviluppare strategie linguistiche per difendere e fare accettare dagli altri le nostre tesi, ma più spesso dobbiamo saper analizzare i ragionamenti degli altri per valutarli e sapere se farci convincere o meno. Lo studio di questo tema non è più affidato unicamente alla filosofia, si può anzi sicuramente parlare di un approccio interdisciplinare. Dalla logica, la sociologia, il diritto, la filosofia, la semiotica, la psicologia, fino alla linguistica e alla psicolinguistica, l'interesse per quella che oggi viene definita “argomentazione”, è grande. Ma è solo con gli anni 70 che l'argomentazione diventa oggetto di studio da parte della linguistica. In Francia e a Neuchâtel hanno inizio le ricerche sperimentali sull'argomentazione. George Vignaux (1976) è forse il primo rappresentante del mondo francofono ad interessarsi di questo tema. Poi Anscombre e Ducrot (1983). Vincenzo Lo Cascio (1991) è, in fine, uno dei pochi autori italiani, che ha contribuito, alle ricerche di psicolinguistica sull'argomentazione. Il problema, per chi si vuole occupare dell'argomentazione dal punto di vista linguistico, nasce dal fatto che anche se nel passato non sono certo mancati i testi di retorica, il mondo greco prima e quello latino poi, ci hanno lasciato numerosissimi studi su questo tema, e anche se di recente in Europa e negli Stati Uniti l'interesse per questo argomento è rinato, sono veramente pochissimi i testi che lo affrontano da un punto di vista prettamente psicolinguistico. In quest'ottica si inserisce anche la presente opera, in cui l'argomentazione viene studiata proprio dal punto di vista della psicolinguistica. L'argomentazione viene analizzata in quanto processo cognitivo, sia per quanto riguarda il soggetto che la produce, che per quanto riguarda l'interlocutore, il destinatario. Si è sviscerato il tema trattandone tutti i punti fondamentali, ma analizzando anche le principali teorie che sono state formulate a riguardo. Partendo dagli aspetti più generali si è giunti fino all'analisi di singole componenti linguistiche, particolarmente importanti in un profilo argomentativo.
