La vita e le esperienze di Dante Cruicchi (1921-2011) costituiscono un osservatorio privilegiato e un punto di vista di grande interesse sulla storia del Novecento europeo e non solo. Cruicchi, giovanissimo, vive l’esilio antifascista in Francia insieme alla sua famiglia; nei primi anni Quaranta è arruolato nelle truppe italiane di stanza nei Balcani; dopo l’8 settembre attraversa l’odissea per molto tempo taciuta degli internati militari italiani nei campi di concentramento del Terzo Reich; nell’immediato dopoguerra si impegna in politica tra i comunisti emiliani; negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta approfondisce la passione per il giornalismo politico e di inchiesta, lavorando come inviato in Africa, Asia e America Latina. Fin da allora internazionalismo e pacifismo si intrecciano nel suo lavoro politico-culturale, rispecchiandosi anche nell’intensa opera svolta nelle amministrazioni locali, soprattutto a partire dalla metà degli anni Settanta, quando viene eletto sindaco di Marzabotto e poi segretario generale dell’Unione mondiale delle città martiri. Al Comitato regionale per le onoranze ai caduti di Marzabotto e all’Istituto storico provinciale della Resistenza di Bologna è apparso doveroso occuparsi presto della sua figura, impedire che con la sua scomparsa, si cominciasse a stendere su quella vita il cono d’ombra della memoria labile e della dimenticanza che non è cosa rara che nel nostro paese avvenga. Avete in mano il frutto di questa decisione. Un’articolazione di saggi che sfaccettano un’esistenza plurale percorsa da un’unica corrente ideale, da un fuoco battagliero contro ogni forma di ingiustizia, dovunque si venisse a conoscere che si verificasse e senza attendere i tempi giusti e opportuni, perché e potrebbe essere il motto di Dante Cruicchi, si è sempre in ritardo nei confronti delle sofferenze e delle ingiustizie che l’umanità sa infliggersi e che solo l’umanità stessa può provare a redimere.

Town twinning refers to the postwar phenomenon of administrative exchange between analogous municipalities. Cold War-related research has mostly interpreted it as an instrument to pursue European integration, or to solidify détente "from below". However, municipalities were not only administrative, neutral actors, but also bearers of political content. This is particularly visible in the case of Italian towns located in the Western bloc, guided by socialist-oriented administrations, and their "twin" counterparts in the German Democratic Republic. This volume explores the connections initiated by such towns in the 1960s-1970s, focusing on socialist-specific conceptions which fueled the policies implemented by "red" municipalities, in managing local economies and social policies, but also in maintaining a lively and interconnected transnational microsociability among grassroots activists. Despite the increasing ideological divergences between Eastern and Western communists, and between Italian democratic communists and the more dogmatic and repressive, strictly pro-Soviet ones in the GDR, communication continued to flourish on the local level. The book explores what still linked the two worlds together, the "bright side of socialism": in this case, a common symbolism related to the past, practical exchanges in the present dimension, and a shared future imagination and conception of the town on the basis of a socialist horizon, built around welfare and services for citizens and workers.

In the 18th century Italian theatre and its artists became vital to Russian rulers, who employed Italian musico-dramatic works to advance their political agendas and emphasize Russia’s cultural uniqueness and its cosmopolitan character. Innumerable playwrights and composers, actors and singers were active at the Russian court. Usually considered at best peripheral to Europe, the faraway Russian Empire represents a particularly powerful example of the mobility of theatre agents and the circulation of artistic practices. This book sets a new regional accent on imperial Russia, thus mitigating the traditional historiographical emphasis on Western Europe, and adopts a transnational approach to theatre and music history. Its aim is twofold. First, to explore Italian music-theatrical repertoires that occupied a crucial position within the spectacle of absolutism in Russia. Second, to investigate careers and travel routes of the Italian theatre professionals. The examination of their activities at the Russian court aims not only to provide a fuller understanding of their vital role in the transmission of socio-political and artistic ideas, but also to more firmly situate Russia in the broader arena of European cultural production.

La pace è molto più della semplice assenza di guerra. La parola biblica shalom indica una condizione di pienezza di vita che la violenza distrugge e annienta alla radice. Ed è proprio una riflessione radicale quella che Papa Francesco offre in queste pagine, nelle quali dispiega il suo insegnamento sulla necessità della fraternità e l’assurdità della guerra. Pagine intrise della sofferenza delle vittime in Ucraina, dei volti di quanti hanno patito il conflitto in Iraq, delle vicende storiche di Hiroshima, fino all’eredità, purtroppo inascoltata, dei due conflitti mondiali del Novecento. Francesco non fa sconti a nessuno e individua nella bramosia del potere, nelle relazioni internazionali dominate dalla forza militare, nell’ostentazione degli arsenali bellici le motivazioni profonde che stanno dietro alle guerre che ancora oggi insanguinano il pianeta. Scontri che seminano morte, distruzione e rancori e che porteranno nuova morte e nuova distruzione, in una spirale cui solo la conversione dei cuori può porre fine. Il dialogo come arte politica, la costruzione artigianale della pace, che parte dal cuore e si estende al mondo, il bando delle armi atomiche, il disarmo come scelta strategica sono le indicazioni concrete che Francesco ci affida affinché la pacificazione diventi realmente l’orizzonte condiviso su cui costruire il nostro futuro. Perché dalla guerra non può nascere nulla di veramente umano.
