Cet ouvrage analyse les changements dans l’organisation du travail artisanal et dans l’accès au statut d’artisan depuis les années 1980, moment où la sociologie a cessé de prendre ce groupe pour objet de recherche. Située à la croisée de plusieurs sociologies instituées (groupes professionnels, travail et mobilités sociales), elle combine différentes méthodes d’investigation : recueil et exploitation de données statistiques, observation et analyse de productions institutionnelles et entretiens avec des artisans sortants (âgés de 50 ans et plus) et entrants (installés depuis 3 à 5 ans). Cette étude révèle que le modèle du métier, quasi unique dans les années 1980, fait place à une variété de cas qui déstabilisent ce qui fondait la régulation du travail artisanal et la reproduction traditionnelle du groupe des artisans. Elle pointe en effet la variété dans les pratiques professionnelles, les savoirs mobilisés et dans les modes d’acquisition de ces savoirs. L’accès au statut d’artisan s’est aussi diversifié : des reconvertis (décrocheurs de l’Université ou ex-cadres) intègrent aujourd’hui le secteur des métiers. Contrairement à ce qui prévalait il y a une trentaine d’années, les artisans qui s’installent désormais ne sont majoritairement pas passés par un statut d’ouvrier et leurs parents sont plus souvent issus de catégories sociales moyennes et supérieures. On assiste finalement à un mouvement d’éloignement entre les classes populaires et les petits indépendants.

The problem of the general political inclinations of the petite bourgeoisie, and especially its relationship to fascism, is one of the major questions currently facing historians dealing with European society in the past one hundred years. Independent artisans have at best been seen as an anachronism in the industrial age. Often, they are regarded as the social basis of the fascist movements of the 1920s and 30s because of their supposedly reactionary class interests. Unfortunately, such sweeping analyses--by both Marxists and non-Marxists alike--have been based largely on one case, that of Germany. It is France however, that has been considered the pre-eminent nation of the petit bourgeois, and fascism had only limited appeal there. This is the central question Zdatny addresses in this book as he examines the social and political history of the archetypical petite bourgeois, the self-employed craftsmen of France.
