Che cosa fanno i cittadini quando fondano o partecipano a un’associazione? E, ancora prima, che cosa possono fare? Queste le domande di partenza del volume di Sebastiano Citroni sulla quotidianità dell’associazionismo. A partire da un’indagine etnografica, che restituisce concretezza al vissuto dei protagonisti e alla specificità delle pratiche, vengono analizzati la diffusione di nuove forme d’impegno civico a livello individuale, il crescente peso dell’organizzazione di eventi nel repertorio d’azione degli enti di terzo settore e la contrattualizzazione dei loro rapporti con enti pubblici e privati finanziatori. Per ciascuna di queste trasformazioni, i risultati di ricerca mostrano come gli stili associativi filtrino e “metaforizzino” nella vita quotidiana di gruppo i fattori generali di contesto nell’ambito dei quali l’azione civica prende forma. La ricerca etnografica condotta da Citroni invita così ad abbandonare ogni facile retorica sulla neo-liberalizzazione del terzo settore e mostra quanto la sua azione come società civile si dispieghi anche sul piano ordinario degli stili dell’associarsi quotidiano e del loro potere istituente.

Quante opportunità di cittadinanza ci offre, oggi, lo spazio pubblico? Quanto spesso abbiamo occasione di sperimentarci, insieme ad altri, in azioni pratiche dove le nostre necessità trovano soluzioni che chiamano in causa gli assetti sociali più generali e i bisogni degli 'altri'? In molti Paesi europei le piazze sono piene, le strade invase e lo spazio pubblico è un rituale che crea effervescenza collettiva, solidarietà, capacità di futuro. Una situazione impensabile in Italia, dove le pratiche associative e la partecipazione sociale non alimentano più il circuito della rappresentanza politica. La domanda di futuro rimane drammaticamente separata dalla sua offerta. La chiusura nel presente alimenta una politica della paura e della rabbia, dove conta la distanza guadagnata da chi è più debole. Occorre ricostruire la capacità collettiva di futuro nei diritti di cittadinanza, nella rappresentanza politica e nel governo dei luoghi di vita e di lavoro. Occorre fare spazio alla politica per dare voce a chi ha meno potere. Solo in questo modo i bisogni individuali diventano soluzioni universalistiche, generative di nuove forme dell'agire in comune. Un saggio originale sulla necessità di progettare un futuro condiviso a partire dagli spazi della politica e dai luoghi di vita e di lavoro delle persone.
