Un jour qu'Ingres dinait ici, nous prenions, comme aujourd'hui, a cette meme place, le cafe en plein air; je causais avec un ami, et j'etais, parait-il, dans la pose du portrait. Ingres se leve, s'approche de moi, et me parlant presque a l'oreille: Venez poser demain, me dit-il; votre portrait est fait. Le lendemain, en effet, je reprenais mes seances, qui furent de tres-courte duree; en moins d'un mois, le portrait fut acheve. J'eus la bonne fortune d'aller voir ce portrait chez M. Ingres avant l'ouverture du Salon. Je me souviens, comme si j'y etais, de l'impression etrange qu'il me produisit, et il me fallut quelques instants avant de m'accoutumer au ton violace de cette peinture. Je l'ai revu depuis bien souvent, j'en ai meme fait une copie, et je m'explique un mot de M. Ingres, que je ne comprenais pas alors: C'est le temps qui se charge de finir mes ouvrages. Ce portrait a completement perdu l'aspect qui m'avait frappe, et voici pourquoi. Les laques dont M. Ingres 'avait l'habitude de se servir sont de peu de duree, la lumiere tend a les absorber; l'huile au.contraire jaunit, 'et ses peintures anciennement faites, en perdant leurs tons violaces et en prenant une teinte doree par l'action du temps sur l'huile, ont gagne, sinon comme couleur, du moins comme aspect general. Cela etait bien sensible a l'exposition ou figurerent les deux portraits dont je parle. Celui de madame de Vaucey avait l'apparence d'un portrait...

In the modern lexicon, ‘object’ refers to an entity that is materially constituted, spatially defined, and functionally determined. In contrast, the Latin word ‘fantasia’ has, since antiquity, referred to an apparition or the ability to imagine something that could be equally an object, an image, or a concept. This tension prompts further inquiry into the interrelations and differences between the experience of tangible objects (their perception and handling) and the creation of new objects (their conception and formation). What correlations exist between object fantasies, the self-consciousness of subjects, and the concrete and imagined conditions of human beings’ social lives? Although mastery of the representation of the human figure was central to art making as early as the fifteenth century in Europe, in the nineteenth-century French imagination the artist's model became identified as a distinct social type and cultural trope. This study of the artist's model in Paris between 1830 and 1870 incorporates three histories: a social history of professional models, a cultural history of models as social types, and an art history of representations of the model in elite and popular visual culture. It takes as its starting point the artist-model transaction: demonstrating that stereotypes of 'the model' that figured in the public imagination were framed both by gender and ethnicity, the book develops a nuanced typology of different types of models. Interwoven with the analysis of the constructed identities of models are accounts of the lives of particular models and the histories of the urban population groups from which they emerged. The Invention of the Model: Artists and Models in Paris, 1830-1870 is an adept exploration of a major issue in nineteenth-century art which will be of interest not only to art historians, but also to social and French cultural historians.
