Foundations of Interpersonal Attraction is intended to provide students of interpersonal relationships with a source book that reviews, integrates, and elaborates basic material concerned with interpersonal attraction—the affectional component of social relationships. All interpersonal relationships can be characterized, in part, by the strength and nature of the affectional tie between the persons involved. The ubiquity of attraction phenomena, and the extensive data that have begun to emerge concerning its nature, antecedents, and interpersonal correlates, provided the original rationale and impetus behind the development of the book. The book contains 16 chapters organized into five parts. Part I briefly highlights the history of attraction research and lays out some central themes related to conceptualizing and researching attraction. All persons develop attachments through social interaction, but the nature and antecedents of such feelings differ depending on the age and cognitive-developmental level of the persons involved as well as on the sociocultural context in which the interaction takes place. Part II is devoted to detailing these issues. Parts III and IV consist of a series of contributions that provide conceptual frameworks for studying attraction. Part V is devoted to romantic attraction.

La thèse défendue dans le cadre de ce travail consiste à envisager l'attraction interpersonnelle comme un processus fonctionnel d'adaptation sociale. De ce point de vue, la similitude d'attitudes ne conduirait pas systématiquement à l'attraction, mais sa valeur dépendrait du contexte social. Sur la base du modèle des récompenses par l'interaction (Berscheid, 1985 ; Davis,1984), nous attendions que la relation similitude/attraction apparaisse uniquement lorsque les attitudes seront pertinentes pour la situation. Utilisant une version modifiée du paradigme de la cible fantôme (Byrne, 1971) et un indice de proximité fonctionnelle comme nouvelle mesure d'attraction, (validée à travers 2 études pilotes), une 1ère série d'expériences a été conduite afin de montrer l'impact des facteurs liés au contexte social sur la relation similitude/attraction. Les résultats indiquent, comme prévu, que cette relation apparait uniquement lorsque les attitudes sont pertinentes pour la situation. Les résultats d'une 2de série d'expériences indiquent par ailleurs que l'activation de la catégorisation de genre annule l'effet de la similitude sur le choix d'attraction. Ces résultats confirment l'hypothèse de l'attraction sociale dépersonnalisée (Hogg, 1992 ; Hogg et Turner, 1985) selon laquelle deux formes d'attraction existent : l'attraction sociale dépersonnalisée et l'attraction interpersonnelle. La 1ère serait déterminée par les caractéristiques prototypiques des membres du groupe d'appartenance (identité sociale) tandis que la 2de dépendrait des caractéristiques idiosyncrasiques de chaque individu (identité personnelle). L'activation de chacune des formes d'attraction dépendrait des changements intervenant dans la situation sociale. L'ensemble des résulats suggèrent que la compréhension de la relation similitude/attraction nécessite d'étudier simultanément les aspects liés à la dynamique interpersonnelle (similitude interpersonnelle) et intergroupe (appartenance catégorielle)

Physical attractiveness phenomena permeate society with somber ramifica tions. Correspondingly, practical applications of physical attractiveness phenomena are extensive. The consequence is that almost every person can benefit from knowledge about research on physical attractiveness. Such research material provides valuable information for persons established in their careers, as well as those preparing for a career. Similarly, parents at all stages of their life cycle should be cognizant of how physical attractiveness impacts the psychological and physiological development of children. Because no one is isolated from physical attractiveness phenomena, knowledge of this material should be imperative for everyone. This book consolidates research that specifically addresses physical attractiveness. The first summary was a classic review presented over 10 years ago (Berscheid & Walster, 1974). Since then the research literature has continued to grow, but no comprehensive review has again been published. Even though research summaries have been presented in a compilation of psychological abstracts (Cash, 1980), and in a discussion of stereotyping literature (Adams, 1982), the study of physical attractiveness phenomena is due for a comprehensive account and an analysis of the extensive, divergent research.
