Les études réalisées sur les littératures des Antilles françaises s'inscrivent souvent dans le cadre des relations présentes et passées entre la France et les îles. Cette approche est d'ailleurs pertinente, si l'on considère l'histoire commune. Cependant, elle a l'inconvénient de présenter toute différence avec la littérature métropolitaine comme spécifique aux Antilles, gommant de la sorte les convergences ou divergences que les littératures antillaises entretiennent entre elles. D'autre part, la Martinique et la Guadeloupe, à la fois départements français et groupes d'îles aux structures coloniales (économiquement et culturellement), sont des sociétés ambiguës. C'est précisément cette ambiguïté qui inspire les œuvres littéraires même les moins engagées. Elle est à l'origine d'un sentiment fondamental du personnage antillais l'auto-exotisme, cette façon d'être exotique à soi-même. Cet ouvrage de littérature comparée aborde les œuvres antillaises d'un point de vue sociologique, " psychanalytique " et littéraire, pour tenter de rendre compte de cette ambiguïté identitaire, à l'origine d'imaginaires divergents dans les deux îles, qui tentent, chacun à sa façon, de répondre à la même question : peut-on à la fois être d'ici et de là-bas sans demeurer un éternel étranger ?

Jody Blake demonstrates in this book that although the impact of African-American music and dance in France was constant from 1900 to 1930, it was not unchanging. This was due in part to the stylistic development and diversity of African-American music and dance, from the prewar cakewalk and ragtime to the postwar Charleston and jazz. Successive groups of modernists, beginning with the Matisse and Picasso circle in the 1900s and concluding with the Surrealists and Purists in the 1920s, constructed different versions of la musique and la danse negre. Manifested in creative and critical works, these responses to African-American music and dance reflected the modernists' varying artistic agendas and historical climates.
