Questo volume rappresenta il completamento di una ricerca attorno alla risistemazione dei confini in Europa centro-orientale al termine della Grande Guerra, compiuta nell’ambito del progetto Firb 2010 “L’Europa di Versailles (1919-1939). I nuovi equilibri europei tra le due guerre nelle fonti dell’Archivio dell’Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito”. Tale fase è stata centrale per la storia di molte regioni e il caso della Transilvania conferma l’importanza di questo delicato momento storico in cui si sono rivisti i confini di molti Stati europei. In qualche modo il libro si collega al precedente volume Ardeal: le origini della Transilvania romena, edito da Edizioni Nuova Cultura nel 2011, di cui prosegue l’analisi, soffermandosi sulle implicazioni del cambiamento del confine, tanto per le relazioni bilaterali fra Romania e Ungheria, quanto per la vita e il contesto socio-economico della popolazione locale.

Questo studio, basato principalmente sulla documentazione dell’Archivio Segreto Vaticano e dell’Archivio di Stato di Firenze, tratta dell’attività espletata nel corso del lungo granducato di Ferdinando I (1587-1609) dalla nunziatura apostolica, fino ad ora soltanto parzialmente esplorata. Nel merito, l’analisi mostra il ruolo di terminale del centralismo romano e delle istanze della Chiesta postridentina, svolto dai rappresentanti pontifici nella Firenze di Ferdinando I, attraverso una poliedrica azione giudiziaria e religiosa. Nel contempo, i nunzi agiscono in qualità di rappresentanti diplomatici del pontefice presso il granduca, dando luogo in più di un’occasione, secondo quanto rivela l’analisi del carteggio inviato alla Segreteria di Stato, ad un cortocircuito tra ambito giudiziario e politico. Perciò, l’approfondimento delle vicende della nunziatura fiorentina fornisce ulteriori elementi alla conoscenza delle relazioni politiche tra Roma e Firenze e della articolata strategia internazionale perseguita lungamente, seppur invano, da Ferdinando I per rescindere i legami della dipendenza del Granducato dalla Spagna asburgica.

This book analyses a corpus of epic and propagandistic texts written at the margins of the Spanish empire in the sixteenth century. It examines the representation of religious conflict in England, Germany and Holland during the reigns of Charles V and Philip II, centring on three episodes widely disseminated in European visual and emotional culture and around which certain foundational Spanish heroic narratives emerged: the martyrdom of the Carthusians and Jesuits in England; the Schmalkaldic War; and the siege of Antwerp. The volume considers the close relationships between epic and history; between epic and visual culture; and between Hispanic epic poetry and the history and religious cartography of Europe during the critical years in which the Anglican Church was evolvingand Lutheranism gaining strength in Germany.

Outram Evennett was a university lecturer in history at Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity College. This book, based on his Birkbeck Lectures of 1951, represents some twenty years' work on the sources of the Counter-Reformation. Evennett did not live to complete his task, but he has provided a remarkable synthesis of the vast European literature on this subject. His method was to isolate the special and positive characteristics of the Counter-Reformation and to account for them in relation to the environment in which they developed. This approach is highly original; it sees in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation an attempt not to check but to extend and come to terms with the more individualistic and modern environment in which the Catholic Church found itself. The Jesuits are treated as agents of this change. Dr John Bossy has edited these lectures for publication and added a Postscript, analysing some of the problems raised in the years since the lectures were delivered. Professor David Knowles pays tribute to Evennett's memory in a Foreword.

The relationship between religion and culture is the key concern of this selection of John O'Malley's articles, as it was in his earlier one, Rome and the Renaissance: Studies in Culture and Religion.
