Le mot juste, c’est-à-dire le mot unique, au moment juste, comme celui qu’échangent les condamnés à mort dans une cellule de la prison de Tulle alors que tout va être dit : « Le matin s’est levé sur ce moment juste, racontera Gatti bien plus tard... Peut-être allions-nous mourir dans quelques heures. Mais si l’aventure devait s’arrêter là, ma vie était remplie. J’avais fait les rencontres essentielles. J’avais vécu ce qu’il y avait de vraiment important dans la vie. Plus tard je me suis aperçu que la vie était faite de ce type de rencontre. Le reste ce n’est que du temps qui s’écoule ». Gatti ou la quête de la parole errante. Ni un voyage, ni un itinéraire, ou alors celui du Grand Tchou ou de l’homme seul, sans fin ni terme, tout juste des étapes. Là où l’homme est plus grand que l’homme, où il prend enfin la mesure de sa démesure. Ces « rencontres avec des citadins extraordinaires » sont donc autant d'enquêtes, réalisées sans concession, par des journalistes, au plus près du terrain, au plus près de l'action.
