La nostra società è ossessionata dai debiti. Tuttavia, la riflessione senza tempo – economica, sociologica, religiosa – su questo aspetto appare monca perché non concentra uguale attenzione alla sua controparte naturale: il credito. Se la storia del debito è la storia della miseria, infatti, il credito racconta la storia della ricchezza. Ai ricchi è stata riservata un'invidia silenziosa, quando non un’esecrazione, certo non una storia. Per questo si glissa sul Credito. Il libro racconta come dalla società della miseria, dove governavano solo i ricchi, siamo passati alla società della ricchezza, dove governano anche i ricchi, non più da soli. Quindi come la tirannide si sia trasformata nella democrazia. Un'evoluzione sorprendente della nostra società, però non scevra da rischi e pericoli: la crescita disordinata del credito può facilmente generare l’autodistruzione della ricchezza. E quindi diminuire la nostra libertà.
