Que reste-t-il de la querelle scolaire et du vieux clivage entre « pédagogues » et « républicains » ? Partis de convictions très divergentes, Denis Kambouchner et Philippe Meirieu font aujourd'hui, avec Bernard Stiegler, le constat que les termes dans lesquels se posa cette querelle ont perdu de leur acuité dans le contexte de la vaste mutation engendrée par les nouvelles technologies. Ces nouvelles technologies créent les conditions d'une démocratisation inespérée de l'accès au savoir ; mais en même temps, associées à un consumérisme effréné et à un marketing intrusif, elles apparaissent comme les vecteurs d'un système toujours plus perfectionné de captation des esprits. In 1944 Horkheimer and Adorno warned that industrial society turns reason into rationalization, and Polanyi warned of the dangers of the self-regulating market, but today, argues Stiegler, this regression of reason has led to societies dominated by unreason, stupidity and madness. However, philosophy in the second half of the twentieth century abandoned the critique of political economy, and poststructuralism left its heirs helpless and disarmed in face of the reign of stupidity and an economic crisis of global proportions. New theories and concepts are required today to think through these issues. The thinkers of poststructuralism Lyotard, Deleuze, Derrida must be re-read, as must the sources of their thought, Hegel and Marx. But we must also take account of Naomi Klein's critique of Milton Friedman and the Chicago School and her account of the 'shock doctrine'. In fact, argues Stiegler, a permanent 'state of shock' has prevailed since the beginning of the industrial revolution, intensified by the creative destruction brought about by the consumerist model. The result has been a capitalism that destroys desire and reason and in which every institution is undermined, above all those institutions that are the products par excellence of the Enlightenment the education system and universities. Through a powerful critique of thinkers from Marx to Derrida, Stiegler develops new conceptual weapons to fight this destruction. He argues that schools and universities must themselves be transformed: new educational institutions must be developed both to take account of the dangers of digitization and the internet and to enable us to take advantage of the new opportunities they make available.

L'informatique s'est invitée à l'école dès les années 70 et, dans la décennie qui a suivi, les premières réflexions d'ordre didactique ont vu le jour. Depuis, leur champ d’action n’a cessé de s’élargir, qu’il s’agisse de l’usage des progiciels dont on a voulu développer l’efficacité, de ce qu’on a ensuite appelé les Sciences et Techniques de l’Information et de la Communication (STIC) et de leur exploitation en contexte d’enseignement (TICE). Aujourd’hui, alors qu’on parle plus largement encore d’éducation aux médias et d’éducation numérique, on observe un resserrement du champ chez ceux, et ils sont nombreux, qui prônent le « retour » à un enseignement du « code ». Comment donc faire le tri dans la variété des options éducatives possibles ? La question n’est pas simple et cet ouvrage n’a pas l’ambition d’y apporter une réponse évidente. Toutefois, l’équipe d’édition a souhaité donner la parole à des acteurs qui, compte tenu de la variété de leurs compétences, éclairent chacun, à travers leurs discours, un des aspects de cette complexité. Qu’ils soient pédagogues, informaticiens, sociologues, chercheurs ou encore didacticiens, ils permettront au lecteur de se faire une idée plus précise du qui, quoi et comment aborder le numérique à l’école, questions qu’il ne faut pas éluder avant de s’engager trop rapidement dans des choix dont la pertinence s’est souvent révélée éphémère.
