Les parcours identitaires fictifs que donnent à lire de nombreux récits contemporains se nourrissent de leur ancrage dans la phénoménalité du sensible. Cet ouvrage est consacré à l'étude de cette corrélation, aux modalités de sa mise en discours et à ses effets en termes de signification. Through close readings of these texts Smart uncovers the authors’ perspectives on events such as the 1837 Rebellion, the Montreal cholera epidemic of 1848, convent school education, the struggle for women’s rights in the early twentieth century, and the Quiet Revolution. Much of Francophone literature is a response to an elaborate discourse that served to bolster colonial French notions of national grandeur and to justify expansion of French territories overseas. A form of colonial exoticism saw the colonized subject as a physical, cultural, aesthetic and even sexual singularity. Francophone writers sought to rehabilitate the status of non-Western peoples who, through the use of anthropometric techniques, had been racially classified as inferior or primitive. Drawing on various Francophone texts, this collection of new essays offers a compelling study of the literary body--both corporeal and figurative. Depuis 1990, des changements importants se sont opérés, dans les écrits des femmes, quant à la manière dont elles imaginent, pensent et représentent la filiation. Les écrivaines des deux décennies précédentes avaient cherché à rompre avec la société patriarcale et s’étaient surtout intéressées à la sororité et aux relations selon un axe horizontal. Leurs héritières ont plutôt investi l’axe vertical de la généalogie et se sont penchées sur leurs relations avec leurs pères, leurs mères et leurs enfants. Ce changement ne s’est pas fait sans mélancolie puisqu’elles ont rompu avec la notion de communauté, devenue suspecte, et se sont tournées vers ce que leurs prédécesseures avaient laissé de côté, soit la famille. Elles ont donc travaillé avec des restes et, qui plus est, avec les lacunes de leurs liens filiaux souvent appréhendés dans la distance et même l’absence. Mais cette mélancolie a été féconde.

Figures de l’excès chez Marie Darrieussecq, Virginie Despentes et Marina de Van de Dominique Carlini Versini interroge les images du corps excessif qui traversent les récits d’artistes contemporaines françaises selon une approche intermédiale. À partir des années 1990, une tendance à l’excès a été observée dans la fiction française. D’un côté, de jeunes écrivaines s’attachent à mettre en scène le corps de manière particulièrement crue. En même temps, un nouveau courant se développe au cinéma caractérisé par des images explicites ou violentes du corps. L’approche inédite de l’ouvrage consiste à comparer les stratégies des deux moyens d’expression pour délivrer une expérience esthétique incarnée tout en démontrant que cette recherche formelle va de pair avec une réflexion poétique sur les frontières (matérielles, culturelles et symboliques) du corps. Figures de l’excès chez Marie Darrieussecq, Virginie Despentes et Marina de Van by Dominique Carlini Versini examines textual and visual images of the excessive body that run through the narratives of contemporary French women artists. From the 1990s onwards, a tendency towards excess has been observed in French fiction. On the one hand, young female writers have portrayed the body in a particularly crude manner. Meanwhile, a new trend has developed in film characterised by explicit or violent images of the body. The monograph's original approach is to compare the strategies of the two mediums to generate an embodied aesthetic experience while demonstrating that this formal experimentation goes hand in hand with a poetic reflection on the (material, cultural and symbolic) boundaries of the body.
