Beatrice de Luna Mendes, nata in Portogallo nel 1510, avrebbe potuto essere solo la moglie, assai benestante, di un commerciante di spezie di successo, Francisco Mendes, ebreo «marrano» convertito per aver salvi vita e beni, come tanti in quel tempo fosco di battesimi forzati e condanne per eresia, roghi di sinagoghe e autodafé. Ma quando il marito muore, e lei si trova a gestire la sua immensa fortuna per conto della figlia Brianda di appena sette anni, la vita della donna cambia. Deve dissimulare la sua vera fede, difendersi da chi vorrebbe approfittare di una donna sola, prendere in mano la responsabilità dell’impresa di famiglia, e non solo: decide che porterà avanti anche l’attività più segreta dei Mendes, usando il denaro e il potere di cui dispone per cambiare il destino di altri ebrei perseguitati, meno fortunati di lei. Dapprima si trasferisce nelle Fiandre, dove la stretta dell’Inquisizione è meno forte. Poi, nell’Europa sconvolta dalle guerre di religione, affronta una vita vagabonda: da Anversa a Venezia (dove riprende il suo nome, Grazia Nasi, che le era stato tolto con la conversione), a Ferrara, ad Ancona e infine a Istanbul, dove diventa una figura di rilievo presso la corte di Solimano il Magnifico. Edgarda Ferri anima la storia di una donna libera, disegnandola contro lo sfondo fastoso e fosco del Cinquecento europeo, arricchendola di dettagli in un racconto dagli orizzonti larghi, pieno di profumi, atmosfere e avventura, sfolgorante di coraggio.
