Pour marquer la rentrée, l'Ecole de Chaillot invite chaque année un architecte contemporain à parler de la place qu'occupent l'histoire et le patrimoine dans son travail de conception et de construction. La Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, dont l'Ecole est le département formation, a été inaugurée en septembre 2007. Nombre des réalisations de Jean Nouvel interviennent dans des tissus dont l'ancienneté et les qualités paysagères leur confèrent un caractère patrimonial. De l'Institut du monde arabe (1987) au musée du quai Branly (2006), les projets de Jean Nouvel se sont régulièrement situés dans un environnement urbain et paysager dans lequel ils avaient à trouver leur place et auxquels ils ont apporté leur pierre. Quelles relations Jean Nouvel cherche-t-il à nouer avec l'histoire du lieu, de son bâti et de ses habitants ? A quelles méthodes de perception et d'analyse a-t-il recours pour appréhender le " déjà là " ?
