Today, nearly a century after the National Fascist Party came to power in Italy, questions about the built legacy of the regime provoke polemics among architects and scholars. Mussolini’s government constructed thousands of new buildings across the Italian Peninsula and islands and in colonial territories. From hospitals, post offices and stadia to housing, summer camps, Fascist Party Headquarters, ceremonial spaces, roads, railways and bridges, the physical traces of the regime have a presence in nearly every Italian town. The Routledge Companion to Italian Fascist Architecture investigates what has become of the architectural and urban projects of Italian fascism, how sites have been transformed or adapted and what constitutes the meaning of these buildings and cities today. The essays include a rich array of new arguments by both senior and early career scholars from Italy and beyond. [...] Danilo Sergio Pirro, accingendosi allo studio del nuovo Piano Regolatore Generale di Terni, ha avvertito meritoriamente l'esigenza di lavorare a una sorta di archeologia del tema progettuale e, per questa via, ha incontrato la figura di Enrico Lattes, portandone alla luce due significativi piani urbanistici. Poi, per curiosità e passione intellettuale, è stato colto da una sorta di innamoramento per il collega cosí prematuramente scomparso, che lo ha portato non solo a ricostruirne l'opera, ma a ricostruirne l'intero iter progettuale. dalla prefazione di LUCA ZEVI ENRICO LATTES, nasce a Pitigliano nel 1904, figlio di Azzaria Lattes, sindaco di Monte Argentario. Azzaria è stato un personaggio di rilievo della comunità ebraica, vicino ad Ernesto Nathan, ne condivise posizioni politiche e la passione per gli ideali mazziniani. Venne ucciso misterioramente a Porto Santo Stefano nel 1906. Enrico Lattes frequenta l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma poi la Regia Scuola d'Architettura, dove fu allievo di Gustavo Giovannoni. La sua attività supera i confini nazionali, quando nella seconda metà degli anni '20 si trasferisce a Tripoli dove lavora al progetto della Fiera Campionaria. Entra vivamente nel dibattito sull'architettura del tempo che vede contrapposti i razionalisti “progressisti” e i “nazionalisti”, difensori della tradizione classicista della cultura italiana nelle terre d'oltremare. Scrive sulle principali riviste d'epoca, partecipa alla grande stagione dei concorsi d'architettura degli anni '30. Si dedica all'urbanistica insieme al maestro Luigi Piccinato. Nel 1933 vince insieme agli architetti Saul Bravetti e Alberto Staderini, il concorso per il piano regolatore di Terni, progetto che tutt'ora plasma l'immagine della città. Nel maggio del 1934, proprio quando il gruppo di architetti si accingeva alla stesura della parte operativa del Piano, Enrico Lattes muore in un incidente stradale alle porte di Roma. Il fratello Guido, gli farà dedicare una via nella città di Terni; mentre l'architetto Mario Ridolfi innalzerà il suo monumento funebre nel cimitero israelitico di Roma.

L'“elegante” e “ardito” Palazzo delle Poste e dei Telegrafi, inaugurato ad Alessandria nell'aprile del 1941, è un'opera decisamente singolare nel panorama dell'architettura realizzata in Italia durante il fascismo. A lungo dimenticato, l'edificio viene riscoperto solo alla fine degli anni Ottanta grazie ai mosaici di Gino Severini che ne decorano il fronte principale. Se il valore dell'architettura, contraddistinta dal rigore delle forme e da un accurato impiego dei materiali di rivestimento, tende a essere oggi riconosciuto, altrettanto non si può dire per il suo autore, l'architetto Franco Petrucci (1905-1982), ai più poco noto. Considerato uno dei giovani diplomati della Scuola di Architettura di Roma più promettenti, a Petrucci si devono nel corso degli anni Trenta progetti che ben figurano in alcuni dei maggiori concorsi promossi dal regime per la realizzazione di opere pubbliche, e che incontrano il plauso dei sostenitori dell'architettura moderna nell'ambito dei più importanti allestimenti volti a celebrare l'ideologia fascista – fino al prestigioso incarico per il nuovo edificio postale di Alessandria. Ma proprio il carattere marcatamente moderno di questa costruzione, che si scontra con il mutato indirizzo a cui, all'inizio degli anni Quaranta, l'architettura italiana è votata, ne sancisce di fatto l'oblio, che nel dopoguerra lo accomuna alla carriera dell'architetto, ora concentrata quasi esclusivamente nel settore delle esposizioni (in qualità per lo più di esecutore). Sopperendo alla dispersione dell'archivio del progettista attraverso la ricognizione di altre fonti documentarie, il volume si propone di ricostruire la storia del progetto e del cantiere di Alessandria, e al contempo di cercare di delineare il complesso clima culturale che contraddistingue la situazione italiana durante il fascismo, rendendo a Petrucci il giusto riconoscimento che gli spetta tra i fautori dell'architettura moderna nel Paese – di cui il Palazzo delle Poste è senza dubbio un esempio significativo.

The influential Dutch architect's long-awaited manifesto on the everyday environment as the first and best ground for establishing the significance and coherence of architecture. According to N. J. Habraken, intimate and unceasing interaction between people and the forms they inhabit uniquely defines built environment. The Structure of the Ordinary, the culmination of decades of environmental observation and design research, is a recognition and analysis of everyday environment as the wellspring of urban design and formal architecture. The author's central argument is that built environment is universally organized by the Orders of Form, Place, and Understanding. These three fundamental, interwoven principles correspond roughly to physical, biological, and social domains. Historically, "ordinary" environment was the background against which architects built the "extraordinary." Drawing upon extensive examples from archaeological and contemporary sites worldwide, the author illustrates profound recent shifts in the structure of everyday environment. One effect of these transformations, Habraken argues, has been the loss of implicit common understanding that previously enabled architects to formally enhance and innovate while still maintaining environmental coherence. Consequently, architects must now undertake a study of the ordinary as the fertile common ground in which form- and place-making are rooted. In focusing on built environment as an autonomous entity distinct from the societies and natural environments that jointly create it, this book lays the foundation for a new dialogue on methodology and pedagogy, in support of a more informed approach to professional intervention.
