EDIZIONE ILLUSTRATA CON OLTRE 450 DISEGNI DEL GONIN DELL'EDIZIONE ORIGINALE DEL 1840 Manzoni dedica circa un ventennio alla stesura de I promessi sposi: l’edizione definitiva esce a dispense tra il 1840 e il 1842. Il romanzo, per la sua profonda caratteristica innovatrice, segna una svolta nel panorama letterario italiano, tanto da rappresentare il primo esempio di “romanzo moderno”, non fosse altro che per la centralità che vi rivestono gli "umili". Manzoni sceglie infatti di mettere sulla scena non un singolo eroe-personaggio, ma tanti cointerpreti di umili condizioni che interagiscono tra loro, e che diventano nel loro complesso “il” protagonista del romanzo. D'altra parte la visione di Manzoni resta profondamente pessimista: i piani e i proponimenti degli uomini sono quasi sempre destinati a fallire miseramente, siano quelli dei malvagi che quelli dei giusti. È la Provvidenza che tesse le fila e volge gli eventi per vie imperscrutabili. Identica sfiducia (già evidenziata nell’Adelchi) emerge anche nei riguardi dell’azione politica e dei movimenti popolari (Renzo alla fine, a mo' di morale, dirà di aver imparato a non mettersi nei tumulti e a non predicare in piazza). Nella società violenta e prevaricatrice del Seicento (“ma solo in quella del Seicento?” pare suggerire Manzoni) le anime buone possono rispondere solo con le virtù cristiane della fede e della carità, accettando con pazienza soprusi e angherie, e affidandosi al riscatto della Provvidenza. L’idea che sottende è che esista un “senso della storia”: ovvero che le vicende umane, lungi dal rappresentare un mero susseguirsi di azioni disordinate e casuali, concorrono al contrario nel loro insieme a eseguire un preciso spartito, partecipino a realizzare le trame di un disegno imperscrutabile.
