This book investigates the racism against Southern Italian children attending North-Western primary schools between the 1950s and the 1970s. Turin serves as the main case study, having become the "third Southern city" after Naples and Palermo during the considered period. Far from being a new phenomenon, racism against Southern Italians gained renewed prominence in the context of the post-war mass internal migrations, becoming one of the pillars of the process of nation-rebuilding. However, in spite of its relevance, it has not received the attention it deserves. By drawing on a wide range of sources – printed, archival, photographic, and oral – and situating itself at the intersection of the history of racism, of education, of psychiatry, and of psychology, the book aims to fill this gap and to add to the debate on the borders that nation-states establish to control the access to power of the different groups inhabiting their territories. John Dewey teorizzò un'educazione democratica per una democrazia che non si risolvesse semplicemente nel diritto di voto, ma si realizzasse ponendo tutti in condizioni eguali nella lotta contro le difficoltà della vita; per lui, non può esserci scuola democratica se non in una società democratica e non può esserci società democratica se non con una scuola democratica, che educhi i giovani al significato profondo della partecipazione, della socialità e della corresponsabilità. Dewey critica con uguale forza sia lo sfrenato egoismo di un capitalismo individualistico e selvaggio sia un collettivismo che porta all'annullamento dell'individuo e mostra come, a differenza di altri regimi politici, la democrazia non costituisce un punto d’arrivo, bensì un processo o un ideale mai interamente compiuto. Di conseguenza, mutamento e transitorietà sono condizioni intrinseche alle relazioni umane. Di più, la democrazia è anche una cultura capace di trasformare il modo di rappresentare se stessi e gli altri. Proprio per questo egli postula un processo educativo permanente. La società democratica doveva - a suo avviso - ispirare una sua propria filosofia, avere una sua nozione della funzione e del metodo della conoscenza, una sua visione del mondo e della verità. E quanto è condivisibile Dewey quando afferma che è l’autonomia di giudizio piuttosto che l’autonomia economica la qualità della quale una democrazia ha soprattutto bisogno? Essa è una qualità morale, che ha la forza di diventare la più importante virtù civile e politica, tanto è vero che è la manipolazione del consenso che segna e accompagna la sua degenerazione. Dunque la stabilità della democrazia consiste nella stessa possibilità dei cittadini di rapportarsi tra di loro come esseri liberi e diversi, ma uguali nel rispetto e nella considerazione, disponibili perciò al dissenso e al conflitto, non soltanto al consenso.

Si può parlare di un «Sessantotto cattolico»? E se è esistito, è stato solo una componente della contestazione giovanile, irrilevante e risucchiata dall’attrazione a sinistra, oppure si è trattato di un fenomeno consistente, caratterizzato da dinamiche specifiche e ramificato a livello europeo, se non su scala globale? Quali ne sono i riferimenti culturali, le reti di collegamento, i momenti e i luoghi in cui si è sviluppata una riflessione comune? Esiste davvero, insomma, una sorta di filo rosso che unisce gli studenti della JEC parigina e gli universitari cattolici che a Madrid scendono in piazza contro Franco, le avanguardie cattoliche della contestazione belga e gli studenti italiani che si sono mobilitati sin dall’inizio degli anni Sessanta? A tali interrogativi vuole rispondere questo libro, che analizza le direttrici di marcia che hanno portato i giovani cattolici europei «verso il Sessantotto», considerando un arco temporale ampio, che comprende il passaggio tra anni Cinquanta e Sessanta e gli orientamenti del mondo studentesco europeo del decennio che precede la contestazione. Italia, Francia, Belgio, Olanda, Germania, Austria, Spagna: paesi che hanno avuto un Sessantotto spesso dirompente, alimentato proprio dalla gioventù cattolica. Gli studenti cattolici hanno in parte anticipato le istanze di contestazione, dal protagonismo generazionale alla vocazione antiautoritaria, declinandola in ambito ecclesiale e sociale. Come i loro compagni, anzi ancor prima dei loro compagni, hanno vissuto i lunghi anni Sessanta come un anticipo di contestazione, mettendo in sinergia, non senza contraddizioni, tensioni spirituali, esperienze associative e aspirazioni sociali.

Il volume raccoglie, in una versione ampliata, i contributi presentati in occasione del seminario ‘Educazione e politica nell’Italia repubblicana’, svoltosi presso il Dipartimento di Scienze della Formazione Roma Tre, il 12 maggio del 2022. Il volume intende mettere in luce, nel confronto tra storici contemporaneisti e storici dell’educazione, come, nella storia delle complesse vicende che hanno riguardato il sistema formativo italiano dalla ricostruzione post-bellica in poi, sia stata operante una contraddizione espressa in un dualismo tra gli ideali di uguaglianza e democrazia sanciti e garantiti dall’entrata in vigore della nuova Carta Repubblicana nel 1948, e il permanere negli apparati amministrativi, nella mentalità ancora assai diffusa nel corpo docente di allora di una concezione ideologica e politica espressione delle élites borghesi e dei precedenti ceti dirigenti, che animarono l’edificazione dello Stato unitario a partire dal secondo Ottocento. Le questioni indagate da studiosi accreditati ma anche da giovani ricercatori seguono tre traiettare tematiche: categorie, linguaggi e pratiche educative; temi del dibattito; i protagonisti.
