Il forte impulso culturale dei sovrani tolemei compone il quadro in cui si inserisce la vicenda umana di Cleopatra VII, abile politica che cercò di reinserire l'Egitto nello scacchiere delle potenze del tempo, compartecipe dei progetti di Cesare, poi di quelli di Antonio; la sua terra entrò definitivamente nell'orbita di Roma.La politica di Cleopatra mirò alla tutela dell'identità e dell'indipendenza tolemaiche, pur all'interno della realtà imposta dal protettorato romano nella condizione di stato cliente di Roma.Cleopatra, d'altra parte, quale regina dell'Egitto, era ritenuta essere l'incarnazione della dea Iside, che corrispondeva appunto all'Afrodite dei Greci e alla Venere dei Romani. Questo controverso avvenimento segno l'inizio di un periodo di fascinazione da parte dei romani per la cultura egizia. L'Egitto è già presente nell'immaginario dei Romani con la sua millenaria cultura sulle rive del Nilo: sono già da tempo arrivati a Roma oggetti di uso comune e produzioni artistiche, simboli di ostentazione del potere economico. Il legame con la grande civiltà del Nilo e sempre stato molto stretto, per la progressiva fortuna e diffusione dei culti isiaci, ed il conseguente diffondersi della moda egittizzante a Roma. La conquista e riduzione a provincia dell'Egitto nell'anno successivo, i rapporti economici e culturali tra Roma e la terra dei faraoni si fecero intensissimi.
