Parmi elles, Joséphine Pencalet à Douarnenez, en Bretagne. Fille de marin, elle fait partie de ces sardinières, les Penn Sardin, qui quelques mois plus tôt ont défrayé la chronique pour avoir mené une grève dure, longue et victorieuse. Elle est élue. C’est une première dans la vie politique française. Mais la victoire est de courte durée. L’élection est invalidée et Joséphine Pencalet tombe dans l’oubli jusqu’à sa redécouverte progressive à la faveur des initiatives de passeurs de la mémoire locale et du renouveau féministe. Mais qui était vraiment Joséphine Pencalet ? Une Louise Michel bretonne ? Une féministe avant l’heure ? Pour répondre à ces questions, Fanny Bugnon se penche sur les archives, les traces et les silences laissés par cette femme au destin tout à la fois ordinaire et remarquable. Retraçant son itinéraire, elle dévoile les enjeux sociaux, politiques et économiques qui ont traversé la condition féminine au cours du XXe siècle, bien au-delà du port breton. This book examines how opposition groups respond to the dilemma posed by authoritarian elections in the Arab World, with specific focus on Jordan and Algeria. While scholars have investigated critical questions such as why authoritarian rulers would hold elections and whether such elections lead to further political liberalization, there has been comparatively little work on the strategies adopted by opposition groups during authoritarian elections. Nevertheless, we know their strategic choices can have important implications for the legitimacy of the electoral process, reform, democratization, and post-election conflicts. This project fills in an important gap in our understanding of opposition politics under authoritarianism by offering an explanation for the range of strategies adopted by opposition groups in the face of contentious elections in the Arab World.

In 2019, 40 years after the first election of members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage in 1979, the citizens of the Union were called to the polls for the ninth time. Between these two dates, the European Parliament changed dramatically, from a mere consultative assembly to the ordinary co-legislator of a European Union plagued by many crises. This book draws on an international conference held at the University of Bordeaux on May 9 and 10, 2019. The various contributions therein intend to take stock, examine the challenges and envisage the prospects, not only of the 2019 European elections but also of representative European democracy in general.
