Uruguay e emigrazione italiana: sogni, speranze e rivoluzioni nasce per approfondire la realtà di un paese latinoamericano, così lontano e così vicino all’Italia. Nonostante nel nostro paese il nome Uruguay non rievochi più molto, il ricordo dei nostri antichi legami è molto sentito Oltreoceano. Gli italiani furono parte integrante della nuova nazione, tanto quanto lo furono della vicina Argentina e, forse più, di quanto non lo furono dell’altro paese vicino: il Brasile. La comunità italiana portò con sé la devozione cattolica per i santi, la cucina, il dialetto (ancor prima della lingua) e la capacità di creare attività economiche dal nulla. Gli italiani non si organizzarono in comunità chiuse, come avvenne in altri contesti, ma si adattarono al paese, ne impararono la lingua e ne sposarono le istituzioni, diventando una colonna portante della nuova identità uruguayana a cui contribuirono in modo creativo. A tal riguardo nel libro si decide di selezionare alcuni aspetti per un breve discorso sulla storia, l’antropologia, la linguistica e persino la religione del paese, con la volontà non di creare un lavoro esaustivo, ma un punto di partenza per riallacciare un legame che troppo spesso viene dimenticato. Most of the world knows Uruguay only for its soccer team, or its vaunted title as the "Switzerland of South America," an enduring moniker given to the country for its earlier social welfare policies and relative stability. Even many scholarly narratives of Latin America fail to integrate the country into historical accounts, reducing the country to, as one historian has explained, "a periphery within the periphery that is Latin America." This volume challenges that characterization, taking one of the most innovative small states in the region and analyzing its transnational influence on the world. Uruguay in Transnational Perspective takes a broad look at the country’s three-hundred-year history, connecting imperial practices and resistance, Afro-Latin movements, and feminist firebrands, among others to understand how the country and its citizens have influenced and shaped regional and global historical narratives in a way that has thus far been overlooked. On the Other Shore explores the social history of Italian communities in South America and the transnational networks in which they were situated during and after World War I. From 1915 to 1921 Italy’s conflict against Austria-Hungary and its aftermath shook Italian immigrants and their children in the metropolitan areas of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and São Paulo. The war led portions of these communities to mobilize resources—patriotic support, young men who could enlist in the Italian army, goods like wool from Argentina and limes from Brazil, and lots of money—to support Italy in the face of “total war.” Yet other portions of these communities simultaneously organized a strident movement against the war, inspired especially by anarchism and revolutionary socialism. Both of these factions sought to extend their influence and ambitions into the immediate postwar period. On the Other Shore demonstrates patterns of social cohesion and division within the Italian communities of South America; reconstructs varying transatlantic and inter-American networks of interaction, exchange, and mobility in an “Italian Atlantic”; interrogates how authorities in Italy viewed their South American “colonies”; and uncovers ways that Italians in Latin America balanced and blended relationships and loyalties to their countries of residence and origin. On the Other Shore’s position at the intersection of Latin American history, Atlantic history, and the histories of World War I and Italian immigration thereby engages with and informs each of these subject areas in distinctive ways.

Il presente volume rappresenta un aggiornamento degli studi condotti tra il 2006 e il 2008 per conto della Regione Lazio sul fenomeno dell’emigrazione laziale all’estero. Pur avendo in quell’occasione ricostruito il quadro sinottico regionale dei movimenti migratori dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, interpretando le dinamiche migratorie come un elemento prodotto dal milieu territoriale in una determinata fase storica, nel volgere di poco meno di un decennio sono sopraggiunti ulteriori cambiamenti, che hanno rappresentato il forte stimolo a riprendere e continuare la ricerca per fornire un quadro dello stato del fenomeno al 2014. The present volume presents an update of a study on transnational emigration from Lazio conducted in 2006 on behalf of the Lazio Region. This study had already examined both the general context of emigration from Lazio (1945-2006) and presented a detailed analysis of emigration in each decade, interpreting migrations also as a result of the territorial milieu in that specific historical phase. The deep changes Lazio has undergone in the past decade have prompted a further analysis of migrations from Lazio that includes the very recent past. The present volume combines the update of studies previously conducted to a new analysis of emigration until 2014, thus offering a thorough perspective on a phenomenon that has deeply characterized Lazio and influenced its inhabitants’ lives.
