Insistant sur la dimension sociale de l'individu, Daniel Marcelli met en garde contre une éducation qui fait primer le « rapport à soi » de l'enfant sur son « rapport à autrui ». Le rôle des parents est aussi de lui apprendre, avec la capacité de choisir, le renoncement et la frustration, de l'initier au principe de réalité. Si chez l'individu le « moi d'abord » occulte le rapport à l'autre, le lien social risque d'être menacé et la société d'en payer le prix.
