Il libro è una raccolta di saggi sulla civiltà classica. Gli argomenti trattati sono i più vari: vanno dalla letteratura alla linguistica, dalla filosofia alla retorica, dalla politica alla scienza della formazione, dalla concezione dell'Eros alla storia dei generi letterari. Gli ambiti di riferimento degli scritti sono quelli in cui si evidenziano meglio le peculiarità della civiltà greca e di quella latina. Noi sappiamo che a caratterizzare lo spirito greco è principalmente l'attitudine a un tipo di indagine che rifiuta ogni dogmatismo e pone a fondamento di ogni affermazione la logica razionale. Peculiare dei Latini, invece, è la scarsa inclinazione all'astrazione concettuale e la tendenza a un'intelligenza di tipo pratico. I temi affrontati vogliono dar rilievo a questa doppia anima della civiltà classica. Da qui la trattazione dei seguenti argomenti: La riflessione sul bello e sull' arte presso i Greci – La nascita della critica letteraria - Il realismo antico, natura e forme – L'esistenzialismo nella letteratura e nella filosofia – Rapporto tra letteratura e potere – Il ruolo dell'intellettuale nella società classica e in quella moderna - Il Rapporto dialettico tra filosofia e politica – Il concetto di Eros da Platone a Freud. Di queste tematiche e di tante altre trattate nel libro si parla sempre con l'occhio rivolto al presente, al fine di rilevare quanto della cultura antica è rimasto nella realtà moderna. Dalla trattazione apparirà chiaro che in molti settori si registra una riproposizione delle stesse questioni di un tempo, al punto tale da far apparire che la distanza dal mondo antico è più di natura temporale che sostanziale.

With Italy under Napoleonic rule at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the antiquarian topic of anti-romanism became a pillar of the Italian nation-building process and, in turn, was used against the dominant French culture. The history of the Italian nation predating the Roman Empire supported the idea of an Italian cultural primacy and proved crucial in the creation of modern Italian nationalism. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Italian studies of Roman history would drape a dark veil over the earliest history of Italy while Fascism openly claimed the legacy of the Roman Empire. Italic antiquity would, however, remain alive through all those years, intersecting with the political and cultural life of modern Italy. In this book, De Francesco examines the different uses of the constantly reasserted antiquity of the Italian nation in history, archaeology, palaeoethnology, and anthropology from the Napoleonic period to the collapse of Fascism.
