Betti, erede consapevole del realismo storico vichiano, polemizza con Heidegger, con Bultmann e con Gadamer perché – pur consapevole che il problema dell’interpretare è legato al problema del comprendere – intende il rapporto di comprensione non fondato sulla soggettiva ed esistenziale «attribuzione di significato», ma sui canoni e principi che salvaguardano sia il reale messaggio dell’autore/agente (scrittore, studioso, artista, agente storico, agente sociale ecc.) sia l’autonomia ermeneutica dell’oggetto in quanto risultato fattuale o prodotto spirituale storicamente determinato.
