Wallon a fait paraitre, en 1847, une Histoire de l'esclavage dans l'antiquite, c'est-a-dire en Grece et a Rome. Toutes les ressources que peuvent fournir en un tel sujet les auteurs grecs et latins ont ete mises en uvre, et pour ainsi dire epuisees. Mais l'esclavage de la Grece et de Rome ne comprend pas toute l'histoire de l'esclavage. Les civilisations anterieures, quoique moins riches en documents historiques, sont neanmoins interessantes a etudier sous cet aspect. Il existe aussi des civilisations posterieures, filles de la Grece et de Rome, c'est-a-dire la Gaule et toutes les nations europeennes, qui ont egalement pratique l'esclavage ancien, continue l'esclavage romain, et transforme celui-ci en servage. Pour la premiere fois dans l'histoire, on a vu l'esclavage s'eteindre chez elles, et ces nations lui survivre. Il convient, des lors, de l'etudier separement dans la Gaule, d'une maniere toute speciale, et puis, dans toutes les contrees de l'Europe. Cela fait, nous indiquerons le dernier etat de l'esclavage, au XIIe siecle, et sa transformation en servage dont les formes variees et adoucies rappelleront, pendant six siecles et plus, les dernieres rigueurs de l'antique servitude. Nous ferons connaitre, en meme temps, quelles sont les causes multiples qui ont produit cet immense resultat. Ce n'est pas au christianisme, ainsi qu'on le repete trop volontiers, qu'il faut l'attribuer. Ni la Bible, ni l'Evangile, ni les Peres de l'Eglise, ni les Empereurs chretiens, ni les Papes, ni les Conciles n'ont apporte a cette grande uvre d'emancipation universelle le concours qu'on en devait attendre.
