The castle of Lecce is the largest medieval and early modern monument in Puglia. Extensive archaeological excavations conducted over the past 20 years have shown that it probably enlarged upon an original nucleus dating to around the mid-12th century, even if it is best known for its imposing walls and bastions dating back to the reign of Emperor Charles V. Although the argument of numerous studies, this is the first time that the monument has been the subject of a large-scale systematic analysis aimed at revealing its secrets, conducted under the direction of the University of Salento. These two volumes are the first detailed reports on the project and bring together documentary studies that reveal its importance and functions and the results of archaeology, the latter in particular on the late medieval Torre Mozza and the incredible wealth of data from the excavations inside it.

This book is a terrific collection of finest re-coloured and restored shots of the men and soldiers of the Great American War. The American Civil War that start the April 12, 1861, it was, with the Crimean Conflict (1854), the first war to be photographed intensively. Americans people for the first time saw vivid and horrific photographs of the terrible effects of the war on his battlefield. The number of Civil War photographs that are available contrasts sharply with the scarcity of pictures from subsequent conflicts such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Italian Risorgimento’s wars, and the various colonial wars before the Boer War. There were a good number of photographers who were present during many of the battles and at other scenes of the American Civil War, and collectively they have provided the world with a visual first hand account of this otherwise fleeting period in American history. Thanks to these dedicated and unselfish pioneers in this new era of photography, men like Mathew Brady. Timothy O’Sullivan, Alexander Gardner, Thomas G.Roche, George S.Cook and others were able to capture a part of the American Civil War that you will never forget. We welcome you to view all our 150 recolored or restored B/W images in this wonderful book!

Compiled at Saint Petersburg during the years from 1837 and 1851, the Historical Description of the Clothing and Arms of the Russian Army has had an enormous impact and great importance for the study on the history of Russian costume and uniformology development over the past centuries. The Viskovatov’s enormous work is based on a great quantity of archival documents and contains four thousand colored and b/w illustrations. It is composed by 30 or 34 volumes (1st edition 1-30, St. Petersburg, 1841-62, and 2nd edition Vols. 1-34, St. Petersburg - Novosibirsk - Leningrad, 1899-1948). The topics discussed start from the early czars until the late nineteenth century. Our new edition has enriched the book with the plates: we revised and colored many of the images so far available just in black and white, as well we found some rare color plates with the collaboration of private collectors. These, together with the first ever English translation, make our collection exclusive and of great value. This volume is devoted to the Russian army uniforms during the Seven years' war.

The Legiones Cannenses written by Samuele Rocca and has been published by Soldiershop Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-18 with categories.

The first Professional army of the Roman Republic The Roman army during the Second Punic War, a citizen army, developed also in parallel a professional army, the legiones cannenses or the Cannae’s legions, formed by the veterans of the battle of Cannae (216 BCE). These units showed the same characteristics of the Late Republic and Imperial Roman army already one hundred years before the reforms of Marius. But, how and why a citizen’s army became a professional force? There are three main reasons that could explain the transformation of a citizen’s army in a professional force, the split of the legionaries from civic life, consequence of the Senatus Consultum of 215 BCE, which stripped the common soldiers of their civic rights, the peculiar commitment and loyalty to each of the warlords, that the legiones cannenses served, namely Marcus Claudius Marcellus, the conqueror of Syracuse, Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, who defeated Hannibal at the battle of Zama, and, last but not least, Titus Quinctius Flamininus, who beat the Macedonian phalanx at the battle of Cynoscephalae, and the evolution and changing of the tactical composition of the legions, from the manipular legion, identical to the other contemporary units, to units which emphasized the primary importance of the cohors and the centuria, as in the late Republican and early Imperial legions.
