«It is better one man dies than the whole nation perishes» (Jn 11: 50). Caiaphas' sentence goes beyond ethical principles and religious expectations. It appears as the saying of a cynic politician. Besides, it is seen as the perfidious advice of a corrupted high priest to the members of the Sanhedrin. Who is this man on whose saying a school is formed? Who is this man who played the most important role in the death of Jesus? Indeed Caiaphas' sentence gives rise to the following relevant question: is the prohibition of killing (Dt. 5: 17), even the killing of a single individual in order to save a whole nation, legitimate? Thus, many issues that are associated with this high priest are associated with Jesus. The book is mainly an exegetical and comparative analysis of Jn 11: 45-54 and the Akan myth of the crossing of the river. Il dolore è quanto di più proprio, individuale e intrasferibile possa darsi nella vita degli uomini, ma nello stesso tempo non è un’esperienza così immediata e diretta come a prima vista potrebbe sembrare. Nessun uomo potrebbe vivere la sofferenza e sopravvivere a essa, se non riuscisse ad attribuirvi un senso. Esistono quindi scenari di senso entro i quali il dolore viene giustificato e compreso. "Tragedia" e "redenzione" costituiscono le due grandi scene entro cui l’Occidente ha sperimentato il dolore. L’esperienza del dolore nella società contemporanea non dispone più dell’integralità della tradizione e tuttavia ne sente il bisogno di salvezza e la fedeltà alla terra. L’unica fede oggi possibile sembra essere quella nella tecnica, ma anch’essa, per molti versi, lascia increduli. L’uomo contemporaneo si pone tra l’ideologia dell’uomo artificiale e i rischi del futuro. In questa nuova scena si vive oggi il dolore.

En este contexto, los profetas dirigieron a menudo su mirada hacia el futuro, vislumbrando la figura de un Mesías y la realidad de un reino mesiánico, en el cual se habían de cumplir cabal-mente las promesas dadas por Dios. El presente volumen, junto con la Introducción General a la Biblia, la Introducción al Antiguo Testamento I: Pentateuco y libros históricos, y la Introducción al Antiguo Testamento III: Libros poéticos y sapienciales, constituyen un completo tratado sobre el Antiguo Testamento.
