È l’estate del 1936 a Ostenda, la piccola città belga affacciata sul Mare del Nord. Seduto in una loggia al terzo piano di una villa, Stefan Zweig contempla l’orizzonte. Lo sguardo fisso nel vuoto, è intento a scrivere e a osservare. Tra poco lo raggiungerà con la macchina da scrivere Lotte Altmann, la sua segretaria e amante. Lui le detterà la sua storia fino al punto in cui si bloccherà, come gli accade da tempo ormai. Lotte lo incoraggerà e lo spronerà, come sempre. È per questo che Zweig la ama. Di un amore silenzioso, riservato, timido. «Una giovane donna mi fa bene» ha scritto una volta all’amico Joseph Roth. Uno strano sodalizio, quello tra Zweig e Roth, un’amicizia che dura da anni. Zweig, maggiore di dieci anni, proprietario di un castello, uomo di mondo, autore di bestseller; e Roth, autore di romanzi-verità di minor successo, alcolista, socievole, generoso, prodigo di racconti, sempre circondato da amici, ascoltatori e sostenitori e, nello stesso tempo, uomo infelice e incattivito. Zweig, i cui libri vengono banditi dai nazisti soltanto nel maggio del 1936; e Roth che già nel 1932 vede i suoi libri messi all’indice e bruciati nel paese della peste bruna, proprio quando con Giobbe e La Marcia di Radetzky avrebbe potuto avere ricchezza e fama. Ora eccoli entrambi in esilio a Ostenda, in mezzo a dileggiatori, combattenti, cinici, amanti, sportivi, bevitori, oratori e narratori gettati sulla stessa spiaggia dal capriccio della storia: Hermann Kesten, il romanziere sempre allegro, Egon Erwin Kisch, il predicatore, Ernst Toller, il gran nuotatore, Arthur Koestler, lo stratega e, soprattutto, Irmgard Keun, la regina dello champagne. Euforica, pazza di gioia per essere fuggita dalla Germania nazista, Irmgard Keun non è ebrea, eppure i suoi libri in patria sono stati vietati. Descrivono donne troppo moderne e sicure di sé, proprio come lei, bella e sfrontata trentenne con stola di pelliccia intorno al collo, grande bocca, grandi occhi. A Ostenda le danno il benvenuto con tre orchidee nella stanza d’albergo. Tutta la comunità di esuli è eccitata dal suo arrivo e, in modo particolare, Joseph Roth, lo scrittore coi baffi biondi sfilacciati, la cenere sulla giacca e la tristezza negli occhi, che, dopo un’iniziale diffidenza, se ne innamora perdutamente. Se dovessi dire da che cosa sia nato il mio desiderio di scrivere “ Gli Anni dell'Amicizia” non saprei dirlo con esattezza: forse il rimettere in ordine vecchie foto e vecchie riviste ha sviluppato dentro di me una specie di film dal quale- proprio al contrario di quanto spesso avviene nel cinema - è nato il libro. Il racconto si svolge nell'arco di otto anni basilari nella formazione dei tre protagonisti, sia per le loro crescite personali, sia per quelle sentimentali, che risentono molto del clima sociale dell'epoca, ed anche della loro vita in famiglia che in qualche modo non può non avere influito sui loro comportamenti. Tutto nella norma, insomma. Con il passare del tempo ognuno di questi ragazzi dovrà confrontarsi con se stesso e con gli altri, e assolutamente fondamentali saranno le scelte che ognuno di loro avrà fatte, scelte che, in quegli anni, alquanto chiusi e a volte bigotti, rappresentano, soprattutto se riguardanti la sfera intima dei sentimenti, come appunto nel caso dei nostri tre amici, autentici atti di eroismo o, in certi casi, di sconfitta, e in altri di rifiuto della vita stessa. Ai tre amici, destinati a vite diverse, ma legati da una salda amicizia, si aggiungerà per ultimo, ma non ultimo per importanza, un quarto elemento che rappresenterà, per il protagonista, appunto la scelta di vita, quella autentica. La più temuta. Mi piace considerare questo mio lavoro un libro ottimista. Gli anni durante i quali il racconto si svolge sono anni austeri, a volte intransigenti, che formano una solida barriera verso tutto quello che rappresenta una gioiosa espressione di vita Di proposito non ho mai voluto trascurare la speranza inesauribile che le cose, i tabù, i pregiudizi, possano cambiare in meglio, in fretta. Perché è così che deve essere! Perché non ho mai cessato di credere che negli uomini, TUTTI, sebbene latente, c'è sempre quella consapevolezza che ci porterà a riscattarci, perché tutti DOBBIAMO sentirci uguali di fronte alla legge di qualsiasi Paese e di qualsiasi Credo. Spero di esserci riuscito.

E’ comodo definirsi scrittori da parte di chi non ha arte né parte. I letterati, che non siano poeti, cioè scrittori stringati, si dividono in narratori e saggisti. E’ facile scrivere “C’era una volta….” e parlare di cazzate con nomi di fantasia. In questo modo il successo è assicurato e non hai rompiballe che si sentono diffamati e che ti querelano e che, spesso, sono gli stessi che ti condannano. Meno facile è essere saggisti e scrivere “C’è adesso….” e parlare di cose reali con nomi e cognomi. Impossibile poi è essere saggisti e scrivere delle malefatte dei magistrati e del Potere in generale, che per logica ti perseguitano per farti cessare di scrivere. Devastante è farlo senza essere di sinistra. Quando si parla di veri scrittori ci si ricordi di Dante Alighieri e della fine che fece il primo saggista mondiale. Le vittime, vere o presunte, di soprusi, parlano solo di loro, inascoltati, pretendendo aiuto. Io da vittima non racconto di me e delle mie traversie. Ascoltato e seguito, parlo degli altri, vittime o carnefici, che l’aiuto cercato non lo concederanno mai. “Chi non conosce la verità è uno sciocco, ma chi, conoscendola, la chiama bugia, è un delinquente”. Aforisma di Bertolt Brecht. Bene. Tante verità soggettive e tante omertà son tasselli che la mente corrompono. Io le cerco, le filtro e nei miei libri compongo il puzzle, svelando l’immagine che dimostra la verità oggettiva censurata da interessi economici ed ideologie vetuste e criminali. Rappresentare con verità storica, anche scomoda ai potenti di turno, la realtà contemporanea, rapportandola al passato e proiettandola al futuro. Per non reiterare vecchi errori. Perché la massa dimentica o non conosce. Denuncio i difetti e caldeggio i pregi italici. Perché non abbiamo orgoglio e dignità per migliorarci e perché non sappiamo apprezzare, tutelare e promuovere quello che abbiamo ereditato dai nostri avi. Insomma, siamo bravi a farci del male e qualcuno deve pur essere diverso!
