La storiografia ha guardato alla produzione architettonica del Novecento con differenti apporti critici, ma denominatore comune è stato il perenne riferimento al Movimento Moderno, ritenuto il parametro unico e il termine di paragone per qualunque "giudizio di valore". Ne è conseguito che, superficialmente etichettata quale manifestazione accademica o tardo Eclettica, gran parte dell'operosità degli architetti della prima metà del Novecento è stata a lungo emarginata dalle trattazioni di Storia dell'architettura contemporanea. La Dissertazione estetica sulla tipografia di Giuseppe Chiantore è un testo mai ristampato dal 1874, quando uscì come appendice alla Prefazione al Manuale tipografico di Giambattista Bodoni, nell’edizione curata da Salvadore Landi e stampata a Firenze. Non si sa molto di Giuseppe Chiantore (1814-1902), ma la Dissertazione estetica e gli altri scritti riuniti in questo libro lo qualificano come una figura di rilievo nella tipografia dell’Ottocento. Fu apprendista presso la tipografia torinese di Carlo Chirio e Carlo Mina. Nel 1839 ottenne il brevetto di stampatore per la città di Alba. Entrato in società con Gioacchino Sansoldi, inizia nel 1840 a operare con il nome Tipografia Chiantore e Sansoldi. Dopo una decina d’anni è a Pinerolo come tipografo del Municipio, e poi di Sua Maestà. Dal 1873 al 1880 passa alla direzione dell’Unione Tipografica di Torino fondata da Giuseppe Pomba. Oltre alla Dissertazione, risulta che Giuseppe Chiantore abbia scritto solo alcuni brevi testi d’occasione, tutti qui riproposti; chiude il volume una serie di tavole di frontespizi bodoniani tratti da L’arte di Giambattista Bodoni di Raffaello Bertieri, Milano, 1913.
