Le grand ecrivain roumain de langue francaise, Panait Istrati (1884-1935), dont les chefs-d'oeuvre ne furent connus en France qu'a partir des annees 1960, et en Roumanie qu'a partir de 1990, fut longtemps - notamment par la propagande des communistes sovietiques - considere comme antisemite. En meme temps, ou en parallele de ce courant diffamatoire, Istrati etait souvent range parmi les ecrivains israelites: il est vrai que des recits comme Isaac ou Mediterranee, tres juifs dans leur esprit et leur poetique, expliquent en partie cette assimilation. David Seidmann livre ici une mise au point definitive. Panait Istrati n'etait absolument pas juif (ni par ses ascendances, ni par ses obediences) et nullement antisemite. Il avait, pour la pensee juive, une inclination presque naturelle, ce dont put temoigner l'ecrivain Isaac Horowitz, qui fut l'un de ses amis les plus chers a son coeur. "Aujourd'hui, conclut David Seidmann, on n'a plus de peine a convaincre qui que ce soit qu'Istrati est reste ami des Juifs jusqu'a sa mort. Mais meme s'il etait devenu antisemite, il faudrait l'oublier et se rappeler toujours qu'en 1927, six ans avant l'avenement du nazisme et douze ans avant la deuxieme guerre mondiale, il a ecrit cette inoubliable lettre a Jehouda ou il recommande aux Juifs de ne pas se refugier dans l'etude de la Thora dans l'adversite, mais de prendre enfin en main leur propre defense."
