Le concept de paradigme, et son corollaire le changement de paradigme, ont été posés par l'épistémologue et historien Thomas Kuhn qui observait les progressions de la connaissance au fil du temps. Le processus cyclique qui l'a rendu célèbre procède surtout d'une analyse sociétale des "tensions essentielles" entre idées neuves et pensées dominantes. Le chercheur apparaît dans ses comportements socio-culturels et c'est en tant que membre d'une communauté de pensée qu'il intervient sur l'échiquier du changement. Mais ce qui se passe en lui, les déterminants de ses choix, les motifs et ressorts de ses orientations, ne sont pas documentés, limitant notre compréhension de ces moments subtils qui signent l'amorce d'une mutation collective. Ce qu'il vit face à la nouveauté, aux incongruités qui bousculent l'ordre établi, à l'insolite ou l'improbable voire l'invraisemblable, les risques qu'il prend, les obstacles qu'il affronte, les peurs qu'il défie pour soutenir une idée neuve, toutes ces dimensions d'une expérience souvent reléguée dans les sphères de l'intime, forment le socle de l'émergence d'un nouveau paradigme, la première goûte d'une tache d'huile. Le parti de cette thèse est d'interroger cette expérience chez des chercheurs ayant vécu une mutation de paradigme, c'est-à-dire ayant vécu un renversement radical de leur référentiel de chercheur pour entrer dans une nouvelle manière d'appréhender le monde.
