This book is intended as a systemic functional contribution to language typology both for those who would like to understand and describe particular languages against the background of generalizations about a wide range of languages and also for those who would like to develop typological accounts that are based on and embody descriptions of the systems of particular languages (rather than isolated constructions). Je ne considère pas ce livre comme une oeuvre, mais comme une somme de paroles, des paroles d'homme. En relisant mes textes de chansons, j'ai pris conscience de la part autobiographique de cet ensemble hétéroclite qui, au fond, est un reflet de ce que je suis, de ce que j'ai vécu, le miroir d'un certain moi-même, idéalisé, exacerbé parfois. J'ai souvent été le prophète de ma destinée, comme si je connaissais le chemin à l'avance. Une chanson c'est, à égalité, mots et mélodie. Aujourd'hui, hélas, on parle plus de musique, de groove, de couleur. Les paroles ne deviennent-elles pas alors une simple composante du son ? Le vocabulaire s'appauvrit, et je suis devenu, malgré moi, de chanteur populaire que j'étais, un chanteur élitiste. Cela m'attriste plutôt, même si on commence à s'apercevoir que mes chansons joyeuses sont écrites, au même titre que celles plus graves ou plus ambitieuses. Voilà déjà soixante ans que je m'exprime au clair de ma plume, que je refuse de me "bunkeriser", de me "flaubertiser". C'est pourquoi j'ai classé mes textes par thèmes. Je suis la route d'écriture que m'indique la chanson, ou réaliste, ou impressionniste, mystique, poétique, journalistique mais surtout libre, ce que la quête d'un style ne permet pas. Le style n'est pas l'homme, il est une fabrication artificielle, une élaboration intellectuelle souvent ennuyeuse. Je suis profondément mélancolique et ce depuis mes premiers pas de mots, d'une lucidité précoce qui était peu propice au bonheur. Lisez mes textes à nu en essayant d'oublier les musiques, écoutez-moi avec les yeux.

Although the contributors to this book do not belong to one particular 'school' of linguistic theory, they all share an interest in the external functions of language in society and in the relationship between these functions and internal linguistic phenomena. In this sense they all take a functional approach to grammatical issues. Apart from this common starting-point, the contributions share the aim of demonstrating the non-autonomous nature of morphology and syntax, and the inadequacy of linguistic models which deal with syntax, morphology and lexicon in separate, independent components. The recurrent theme throughout the book is the inseparability of lexis and morphosyntax, of structure and function, of grammar and society. The third and more specific common thread is case, which in some contributions is adduced to illustrate the more general point of the link between word form on the one hand and clausal and textual relations on the other hand, while in other papers it is at the centre of the discussion. The interest of the proposed volume consists in the fact that it brings together the views of leading scholars in functional linguistics of various 'denominations' on the place of morphosyntax in linguistic theory. The book provides convincing argumentation against a modular theory with autonomous levels (the dominant framework in mainstream 20th century linguistics) and is a plea for further research into the connections between the lexicogrammar and the linguistic and extralinguistic context.

This book starts from a first general observation: there are very diverse ways to frame and convey scientific knowledge in texts. It then analyzes texts on mathematics, astronomy, medicine and life sciences, produced in various parts of the globe and in different time periods, and examines the reasons behind the segmentation of texts and the consequences of such textual divisions. How can historians and philosophers of science approach this diversity, and what is at stake in dealing with it? The book addresses these questions, adopting a specific approach to do so.
