Masculine Virtue in Early Modern Spain extricates the history of masculinity in early modern Spain from the narrative of Spain’s fall from imperial power after 1640. This book culls genres as diverse as emblem books, poetry, drama, courtesy treatises and prose fiction, to restore the inception of courtiership at the Spanish Hapsburg court to the history of masculinity. Refuting the current conception that Spain’s political decline precipitated a ’crisis of masculinity’, Masculine Virtue maps changes in figurations of normative masculine conduct from 1500 to 1700. As Spain assumed the role of Europe’s first modern centralized empire, codes of masculine conduct changed to meet the demands of global rule. Viewed chronologically, Shifra Armon shows Spanish conduct literature to reveal three axes of transformation. The ideal subject (gendered male in both practice and law) became progressively more adaptable to changing circumstances, more intensely involved in currying his own public image, and more desirous of achieving renown. By bringing recent advances in gender theory to bear on normative rather than non-normative masculinities of early modern Spain, Armon is able to foreground the emergence of energizing new models of masculine virtue that continue to resonate today.

L'espace est une notion essentielle autour de laquelle s'organise la complexité d'une oeuvre théâtrale, à la fois texte en action, représentation et genre poétique comme la « comedia ». C'est dans cette perspective qu'est analysée la poétique des espaces naturels, à partir d'un corpus de cinquante-six « comedias » de différents types, depuis Lope de Vega jusqu'au Calderón de la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Dans le cadre du système spatial codifié de la « comedia », l'analyse typologique des actions en relation avec les espaces naturels permet d'explorer un imaginaire cohérent à travers un ensemble de lieux et de paysages. Selon une dialectique qui va de l'espace scénique du « corral » à l'espace dramatique, la mer et le « monte » sont, en particulier, l'objet de différentes formes de représentation. Celles-ci dépassent souvent le cadre strictement théâtral, à une époque charnière où l'appréhension de l'espace naturel ouvre de nouvelles perspectives paysagères et iconographiques.

Su dimensión histórico-política ha sido la más abordada por los especialistas, pero sus implicaciones antropológicas y geopolíticas son las que más potencialidad tienen. Por eso, este libro viene a contribuir a construir un polo de conocimiento en el marco de una comunidad de pensamiento panibérico, con una fuerte matriz iberoamericana. Lucrarea de față reprezintă o analiză aprofundată a modului în care tematica marină este reprezentată în literatura postmodernă, abordând sistematic textele avute în vedere din două perspective: una comparatistă, care este centrată pe relația hipotext – hipertext și pe procedeele de rescriere a unor topoi maritimi în contextul unei intertextualități generice, și o alta hermeneutică și antropologică, ce se apleacă asupra elementelor constitutive ale imaginarului marin. Sunt scoase în evidență caracteristicile unice ale ficțiunilor postmoderniste care poartă amprenta imaginarului marin, sugerând că acestea pot forma un subgen literar de sine stătător. Din punct de vedere teoretic, lucrarea se concentrează pe influențele filosofilor francezi în evoluția conceptului de imaginar și analizează modul în care imaginarul marin a influențat și a fost influențat de postmodernism. Prin intermediul acestei analize se explorează relația dintre spațiu și timp în contextul ficțiunilor postmoderniste, cu accent pe ideea că spațiul marin devine central, în detrimentul temporalității. Această investigație a ficțiunii postmoderniste cu tematică marină oferă o perspectivă unică asupra modului în care literatura răspunde la schimbările socio-culturale și istorice, subliniind adaptabilitatea și relevanța continuă a imaginarului marin în era postmodernă.
