The Inclusion of the Other contains Habermas's most recent work in political theory and political philosophy. Since its appearance in English translation in 1996, Jurgen Habermas's Between Facts and Norms has become the focus of a productive dialogue between German and Anglo-American legal and political theorists. The present volume contains ten essays that provide an overview of Habermas's political thought since the original appearance of Between Facts and Norms in 1992 and extend his model of deliberative democracy in novel ways to issues untreated in the earlier work. Habermas's theory of democracy has at least three features that set it apart from competing positions. First, it combines a concern with questions of normative justification with an empirical analysis of the social conditions necessary for the realization of democratic institutions. Second, at the heart of his model is the assertion of an internal relationship between liberalism and democracy. Finally, Habermas defends a conception of universal human rights that is not only sensitive to cultural differences but also calls for legal and political institutions that facilitate the cultivation of cultural and religious identities within pluralistic societies. These essays demonstrate the extraordinary power of Habermas's theory of democracy through a further engagement with Rawls's political liberalism and through original contributions to current debates over nationalism, multiculturalism, and the viability of supranational political institutions.

Fede e sapere. In mezzo scorre tutta la nostra storia. Che inizia nel mito, in Grecia. Poi, con la nascita del platonismo cristiano nell’Impero romano, il pensiero greco è stato ereditato e plasmato dalla discussione su fede e conoscenza. È qui l’origine del pensiero post-metafisico. Da qui il racconto della sua genealogia deve cominciare. In quel momento epocale la filosofia si è appropriata dei contenuti essenziali delle tradizioni religiose per trasformarsi in un sapere capace di fondamento. Il pensiero laico che è venuto dopo Kant e Hegel deve a questa osmosi l’idea della libertà razionale, insieme a tutti i concetti fondamentali della filosofia pratica che si accompagnano a questa idea di libertà e ci riguardano da vicino, ancora oggi. La storia della filosofia che Jürgen Habermas racconta è un corpo a corpo che dura millenni. Anche se questa è una storia epica, non racconta nessun destino: la filosofia, se contemplata lungo l’arco temporale di tutta la sua esistenza, è una successione irregolare di processi di comprensione che nascono in modo contingente. Questa genealogia esplora tali contingenze, una dopo l’altra, e ricostruisce la strada lunghissima che giunge fino a noi. L’indagine sulle contingenze che muovono il pensiero rivela una necessità tutta umana: la necessità di un concetto globale di ragione. È il momento per la filosofia di guardare se stessa. Una storia della filosofia, scrive Habermas, oggi deve rispondere a questa domanda: “Che cosa significa per noi l’espansione della conoscenza scientifica del mondo? Per noi come esseri umani, come abitanti di questo tempo e come individui”.

Un’istituzione quale lo Stato moderno, che fin dai suoi primi passi si è autorappresentata quale sovrana e interprete di un potere assoluto (libero da ogni vincolo), è del tutto incomprensibile se non si coglie il legame che da sempre essa intrattiene con la teologia. Dal momento che pretende obbedienza e rivendica un controllo monopolistico della forza sul territorio, lo Stato intreccia insomma questioni istituzionali e religiose: prima rivendicando una legittimazione di carattere sacrale e utilizzando la religione quale instrumentum regni, poi prospettandosi come alternativa metafisica e fonte autentica di ogni possibile salvezza e, infine, interpretando il venir meno di ogni trascendenza e il trionfo dello strumentalismo. Il presente volume, che evoca un gran numero di questioni e autori senza avere la presunzione di individuare una soluzione definitiva a dibattiti tanto complessi, traccia un percorso volto a chiedersi se si possa davvero aver fede nello Stato, facendone il senso ultimo della nostra esistenza, e prestar fede a quanto affermano gli ideologi schierati a sua difesa. Il tema della teologia politica e quello della dissimulazione – dello Stato quale fonte di occultamento della realtà – sono d’altro canto strettamente legati, dato che l’aperta sfida che il potere moderno ha lanciato alle confessioni religiose propriamente dette lo ha costretto a moltiplicare le falsificazioni e gli inganni.
