Colonie allemande de 1884 à 1916, à la suite du traité de Versailles, la SDN a placé le Cameroun sous mandat français. En 1946, l'ONU a transformé le régime du mandat de tutelle et l'administration française s'est poursuivie jusqu'en 1960 date à laquelle le pays a accédé à la souveraineté internationale. Outre les structures administratives, la France y a instauré une organisation judiciaire à l'instar de ce qui avait cours dans ses colonies africaines. Par un décret de 1924, elle a étendu au Cameroun les dispositions du code d'instruction criminelle. Dans les faits, cette extension n'était valable que pour les juridictions propres aux européens. Les autochtones continuaient à relever des tribunaux pour indigènes. En 1946, il y a eu suppression de la justice de droit local et instauration d'une justice pénale uniforme pour tous les habitants du Cameroun. L'étude de l'information judiciaire entre les droits français et camerounais offre l'opportunité de jeter un regard sur deux pays qui à un moment donné ont partagé la même la même procédure pénale et qui par la suite ont fait évoluer chacun à sa manière sa législation dans l'espace géographique qui est le sien. Dans les changements opérés, le législateur a dû corriger des imperfections ou omissions de la loi. Il a parfois agit sous l'influence des conventions à caractère universel et sous-régionaux ainsi que la jurisprudence des organes chargés de veiller à leur mise en oeuvre. A cet égard, les normes internationales de protection des droits de l'homme garantissent une meilleure protection des droits de la défense. Les deux pays ont souscrit aux conventions de l'ONU en la matière ainsi que les instruments sous régionaux de propres à leurs continents respectifs. La convention européenne de sauvegarde des droits de l'homme et la charte africaine des droits de l'homme et des peuples offrent des garanties très proches. Compte tenu de leur impact dans les législations internes, l'étude de l'information judiciaire entre les droits français et camerounais déborde le cadre de ces deux pays pour déboucher sur les mécanismes de protection des droits instaurés par ces deux conventions.
