Pourquoi des syndicalismes si différents en Grande-Bretagne, en France et en Allemagne dès la fin du XIXe siècle ? Pour répondre à cette question on compare ici le Trade unionism, le syndicalisme révolutionnaire et le mouvement ouvrier allemand de façon très concrète. D'une part, on examine le s d'organisation ouvrières dans des secteurs industriels ou des territoires déterminés (les mineurs, les dockers, le bâtiment, les grandes villes, etc.). D'autre part, on analyse, d'un point de vue toujours comparatif, des productions symboliques (le Premier mai, les discours) ou des formes d'organisation (mutuelles et coopératives, patronat). Chacun des chapitres à été préparé par les meilleurs spécialistes du sujet donné dans les trois pays, parfois étendu à la Belgique et à l'Italie. Plusieurs réunions ont permis de définir une problématique commune. Enfin, les différents tex te sont été discutés à l'occasion d'un colloque international financé par la Commission européenne. On présente ici la version revue et corrigée de ces textes, assortis d'une bibliographie générale. The central theme of the book has been woven round the five French settlements in India with Pondicherry as their headquarters which France intended to retain even after Britain had quitted on 15 August 1947. France had neglected her Indian settlements over the years and finding a profound change in the attitude of her people after 1947, she tried to mollify them by introducing certain doses of administrative reforms which were unacceptable to them. Inspired by the events of the neighbouring subcontinent, they expressed their desire to identify themselves with their brethren across the border and demanded the merger of the settlements with Indian Union which was, quite naturally, rejected by France. The rejection was followed by the launching of liberation movement. Repressive measures unleashed by Pondicherry government proved ineffective. Along with this there was a strong diplomatic pressure exerted by New Delhi on Paris for withdrawing from the five pockets. France dithered and delayed the solution which further exasperated the people. Events in North Africa and Indo-China were also going against her. The stalemate continued for seven years until Pierre Mendès France came to power. Meanwhile Chandemagore was transferred to India by referendum. However, diplomatic parleys started at the initiative of the French Prime Minister broke the thaw and facilitated the path for peaceful merger of the four south Indian settlements with India. Thanks to the diplomatic efforts and the spirit of conciliation manifested by the two governments, the problem of the French Indian settlements was amicably resolved thereby opening an era of cordiality between the two countries.

Il met en lumière l'inconfort du mouvement syndical, sommé d'agir au nom du bien commun et pas seulement des salariés, piégé par la rhétorique « réformiste » des gouvernements qui aspirent à le domestiquer, pour exister dans la fidélité à sa tradition de contre-pouvoir. Le syndicalisme français, qui semble résigné à n'être plus qu'une force d'accompagnement, pourrait bien être entré dans un nouvel âge de son histoire. The rise of heterosexual culture and the resistance it met from feudal lords, church fathers, and the medical profession. Heterosexuality is celebrated—in film and television, in pop songs and opera, in literature and on greeting cards—and at the same time taken for granted. It is the cultural and sexual norm by default. And yet, as Louis-Georges Tin shows in The Invention of Heterosexual Culture, in premodern Europe heterosexuality was perceived as an alternative culture. The practice of heterosexuality may have been standard, but the symbolic primacy of the heterosexual couple was not. Tin maps the emergence of heterosexual culture in Western Europe and the significant resistance to it from feudal lords, church fathers, and the medical profession. Tin writes that before the phenomenon of "courtly love" in the early twelfth century, the man-woman pairing had not been deemed a subject worthy of more than passing interest. As heterosexuality became a recurrent theme in art and literature, the nobility came to view it as a disruption of the feudal chivalric ethos of virility and male bonding. If feudal lords objected to the "hetero" in heterosexuality and what they saw as the associated dangers of weakness and effeminacy, the church took issue with the “sexuality,” which threatened the Christian ethos of renunciation and divine love. Finally, the medical profession cast heterosexuality as pathology, warning of an epidemic of “lovesickness.” Noting that the discourse of heterosexuality does not belong to heterosexuals alone, Tin offers a groundbreaking history that reasserts the cultural identity of heterosexuality.
