Walter De Maria è una figura cardine all’incrocio tra Minimalismo, arte concettuale e Land art. Esordisce giovanissimo a San Francisco suonando la batteria in gruppi jazz, rock e d’avanguardia; quindi studia pittura e nel 1960 si trasferisce a New York, dove si dedica alla scultura. Nel corso degli anni Sessanta avvia la sua ricerca di Land art e crea monumentali opere nel deserto; in Europa progetta interventi su scala urbana e nel 1968 invade di terra una galleria d’arte a Monaco. I suoi lavori hanno la capacità di forzare i limiti delle categorie estetiche tradizionali, sollecitando lo spettatore a riflettere sul legame tra percezione e cognizione, presenza e assenza. Questo volume propone una lunga intervista rilasciata nel 1972 agli Archives of American Art: una rara testimonianza diretta, nella quale l’artista ripercorre la propria storia e racconta gli anni più fecondi della sua carriera.

La riflessione sul paesaggio è il fulcro dell&'immaginario poetico di Franco Fontana, la cui opera è da sempre tesa a mostrare l&'enigma dell&'invisibile che si cela nel visibile. La fotografia, infatti, è lo strumento attraverso il quale egli coglie l&'inesistente di ciò che è reale, sempre in bilico tra rappresentazione del vero e il cosiddetto vero. Il lavoro di Fontana rappresenta dunque un&'analisi sul vedere inteso come attività immaginativa e conoscitiva: le sue intenzioni non si limitano alla documentazione dell&'aspetto dei luoghi o delle figure che immortala, né a un&'idea di immagine solo quale oggetto estetico. Al contrario, egli propone una riflessione che, pur tenendo conto della realtà, contempla anche una rivalutazione della percezione attraverso la fotografia.

This book stems from the seminal work of Robert Venturi and aims at re-projecting it in the current cultural debate by extending it to the scale of landscape and placing it in connection with representative issues.
